“ | YES! He's gone! He's history! Ha ha ha! | „ |
~ Sid after the Combat Carl toy is destroyed. |
“ | Oh, no! Sid! Get down! | „ |
~ Woody after spotting Sid approaching him and Buzz at Pizza Planet. |
Sidney "Sid" Phillips is the main antagonist of Pixar's 1st full-length animated feature film, Toy Story, the first installment in the franchise of the same name.
He is an 11-year-old boy who destroys toys just for fun. He is Hannah's older brother, Scud's owner, and Andy Davis' opposite counterpart and former next-door neighbor. However, his reign of toy-murderous terror is put to an end after he gets Woody and Buzz Lightyear, the film's two protagonists.
He was voiced by Erik von Detten in the films, who also portrayed Drew Lamerly in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Josh Bryant in The Princess Diaries, and was portrayed by Rachel Fischer in the musical.
Appearance[]
Sid is a slender boy with fair skin, a brown buzz cut, hazel green eyes, and braces. He usually wears a black T-shirt with a white skull, blue jeans, and black sneakers.
In Toy Story 3, he has a small growing beard and wears a dyed green cap, green goggles with mirror effects, headphones, a high visibility vest, and a gray shirt underneath his T-shirt.
Personality[]
“ | Buzz: You mean that happy child? Mr. Potato Head: That ain't no happy child. Rex: He tortures toys, just for fun! |
„ |
~ Rex and Mr. Potato Head telling Buzz about Sid after seeing him for the first time. |
Sid is an obnoxious, obstreperous, mischievous, ruthless and somewhat disturbed neighborhood bully with braces, whose idea of fun is terrorizing and teasing his sister Hannah by taking her toys away and using them for scary experiments like switching out heads or performing operations on them.
Unlike Andy, who loves his toys and plays with them gently, Sid destroys his toys in many ways (exploding, burning, or in his "mad doctor" plays). He also in a twisted way has quite a creative/artistic side, as shown by the "Mutant Toys" that he creates by combining parts from different toys.
Despite these negative traits, he did seem to love his pet dog Scud, whom he also collaborated into destroying any toy the Phillips family has, as well.
After his toys turned on him and confronted him alongside Woody, he vowed to never hurt a toy again. Aside from this, Sid remained mostly the same (especially his love of heavy metal) and eventually became a garbage man in the third movie. It is unknown if he is still as disturbed as he once was, or if he managed to turn his life around. Either way, it is possible that he becomes remorseful for all of the toys he indirectly killed and started treating the rest of the toys better.
Biography[]
Toy Story[]
Sid's Introduction[]
“ | YES! (laughs evilly) | „ |
~ Sid's first line. |
In Toy Story, Sid is Andy Davis' 11-year-old next-door neighbor (until Andy moved at the end of the film). Sid is first seen in the film when Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Rex, Bo Peep, Lenny and Mr. Potato Head watch him evilly blow up a Combat Carl with a firecracker with his vicious dog named Scud by his side (with Buzz initially mistaking Sid for his dog, until Woody corrects him). Rex mentions that Sid is supposed to be at Summer Camp, only for Hamm to assume that he must’ve been kicked out early. Bo Peep soon states that the sooner they move away with Andy and his family, the better, where they can feel safe when they move from Sid.
Captured at Pizza Planet[]
“ | All right, double prizes! Let's go home and… play. (laughs evilly) | „ |
~ Sid after he evilly acquires Woody and Buzz from the claw machine. |
Later that day, when Andy & his family go to Pizza Planet for dinner and Woody and Buzz follow them, Sid is also there. After climbing on and stomping on the Whack-an-Alien game, the Crane Game where Woody and Buzz are hiding in catches his attention and Woody becomes shocked that Sid is there at Pizza Planet after he and Buzz failed to catch up with Andy, due to Buzz thinking that the Crane Game is a spaceship as he still doesn't know he is a toy, but a real space ranger as Woody goes in the Crane Game, knowing that he can't return to Andy's room without Buzz.
After evilly grabbing an Alien, Buzz Lightyear is put in view. He then goes after him, getting not only Buzz, but Woody hooked onto his foot as well (Woody tried to save Buzz, but the Aliens wouldn't let him). After skating back home with his new toys in his backpack while Woody tells Buzz and the toy alien from Pizza Planet as they go into Sid's house, they won't be coming out, he is instantly greeted by Scud he gave the alien to. Scud then maliciously destroys it. Then, seeing his sister Hannah with her Janie doll, he evilly snatches the doll and runs up to his room, violently slamming the door in front of Hannah. Revealing he also cruelly teases Hannah, unlike Andy who respects his baby sister Molly. He then evilly pulls out a pterodactyl toy as he played doctor for his "double-bypass brain transplant" as Buzz tells Woody he doesn't believe that Sid had gone to Medical School.
After evilly duct taping the pterodactyl’s head on the Janie Doll's body, he instantly opens up the door and shows the mutated doll to Hannah, saying that “Janie’s all better now.” Seeing this, Hannah shrieks and cowardly runs off to report to her mother. Sid furiously threw the mutant toy onto the ground and angrily ran after her, claiming that Hannah was lying. As Sid exits his room, Woody explored his room to search for a way out, but found the door locked and unable to escape. Trying to find another way out, he then discovered that Sid has taken toys apart and assembled them back together in weird combinations, much to Woody's horror as Buzz tries to call Star Command to send reinforcements for help, still unaware that he is a toy.
Torturing Woody[]
“ | A survivor. Where's the rebel base? TALK! I can see your will is strong. Well, we have ways of making you talk. Where are your rebel friends now? *chuckles* | „ |
~ Sid evilly torturing Woody. |
The next morning, Sid evilly tortures Buzz by spinning him on a drill bit (seen in a deleted scene), and then evilly takes Woody and angrily throws him across the floor, pretending to interrogate him. Next, he evilly opens up the window shade to let the sun in. He then evilly takes out a magnifying glass and sinisterly focuses the hot beam of light on Woody's forehead. Before Sid is about to completely burn out Woody into killing him, his mother tells him that his Pop-Tarts are ready and Sid leaves his room.
The Big One[]
“ | Sid Phillips reporting. Launch of the shuttle has been delayed due to adverse weather conditions at the launch site. Tomorrow’s forecast, sunny. (Sinister chuckle) Sweet dreams. | „ |
~ Sid delaying the launch. |
After Woody discovers that Sid's Mutant Toys are actually good when they reconnect Buzz's detached arm back in place, Sid returns to his room later, with a rocket he had ordered in the mail, labeled "The Big One". He intends to blow apart one of his toys with the rocket for his own amusement. Initially, he evilly planned to blow up that "wimpy cowboy doll", but he couldn't find him (as Woody had hidden under a milk crate). However, when he clumsily steps on Buzz Lightyear's laser button, which activated the laser light bulb, he evilly chooses to tape the rocket on Buzz, evilly stating that he had always wanted "to blow a spaceman into orbit".
Unfortunately for Sid, he is forced to delay the launch due to "adverse weather conditions at the launch site" when a rainstorm hits the neighbourhood, much to his chagrin, which gives Woody and Buzz time to reconcile overnight where Woody tells Buzz the joy of being a toy, which allows Buzz to gain his spirit of being a toy and allows himself and Woody to escape Sid's house when they see the moving truck near Andy's old house next door.
Blast-Off Cancelled[]
“ | Sid: THE TOYS! THE TOYS ARE ALIVE! (sees Hannah's Sally doll and gets frightened) N-Nice dolly... AHH!!! Hannah: *giggles* What's wrong, Sid?! Don't you want to play with Sally?! Sid: GO AWAY...!!! *sobs* |
„ |
~ Sid's last and most famous quote as he is now frightened of toys after seeing Woody and the Mutant Toys come to life in front of him. |
While trying to escape, Sid wakes up and evilly takes Buzz outside to blow him up. Woody and all of the mutant toys plan a way to save Buzz before Sid can destroy him with the rocket, Woody turns the tables against the juvenile bully by put an end to the delinquent's cruel treatment of toys for good. The toys all appear out of nowhere and approach Sid, making him increasingly scared. Woody angrily confronts and then furiously tells Sid to never again destroy on his toys, because they would know if he does again. After seeing Woody angrily come to life in front of his face warning him to play nice, it's too much for Sid, and screaming in horror, he retreats back into the house. Hannah then takes enjoyment in scaring her brother even more with her replacement doll Sally after she discovered how traumatized he was as Sid runs upstairs into his room, reflecting how Sid makes Hannah chase him & then he even scares her. This allows Woody and Buzz to escape Sid's house and continue to catch up with Andy and the moving truck after Woody and Buzz hear Andy and his family leaving their old house next door as he says farewell to the Mutant toys.
As Sid quits his childhood amusement of torturing toys so he doesn't get tortured back by them, in a way to avoid death. He suffers pediophobia for his entire life, but at some point defeats his fear and grows up into a garbage collector, reforming afterwards.
Toy Story Treats[]
Sid appeared briefly in Woody's nightmares during the Toy Story Treats.
Toy Story 2[]
“ | Buzz: Come on, fellas! Did Woody give up when Sid had me strapped to a rocket? Toys: No. Buzz: No! |
„ |
~ Buzz Lightyear's speech. |
Sid did not appear in Toy Story's first sequel Toy Story 2, but he was mentioned by Buzz when he, Rex, Mr. Potato Head, Slinky Dog, and Hamm went to rescue Woody from Al McWhiggin, reminding them when Woody managed to save him from being exploded onto the rocket that Sid strapped him onto.
Toy Story 3[]
“ | So your friends were telling me about a run-in you had with a toy abuser a few years back; shaved-head, black-skulled T-shirt answers by the name of Sid. Ring any bells, cowboy? Well, for some reason, after he met you, he gave up his reign of terror on toys, but I can't say he's done too much with his life. A couple of new attendants here in the Catterpillar room said they saw a man that resembles his description collecting garbage on a reqular basics all over town. I just thought you should know, cowboy, since your history with this guy seems a bit sensitive. | „ |
~ Chatter Phone. |
10 years after Andy's toys have rescued Woody and defeated Al and Stinky Pete in Toy Story 2, Sid makes a cameo in Toy Story's second sequel Toy Story 3, where he is now grown into an adult like Andy and has become a garbage man. He is easily recognized by his black skull T-shirt. In spite of the rather undesirable nature of Sid's job, he appears to be happy and content, as he is singing and dancing to a metal song he likes while going about his rounds.
He first appears when he picked the garbage near Andy's house. As Woody tries to rescue Buzz and the others (who are trapped in a garbage bag that Andy's mom put on the curb while under the impression it was trash). Woody hides behind the mailbox post to prevent being seen by Sid, showing he has forgotten him back from the 1st film. Then Sid rides off in the garbage truck.
Later, after Woody, Buzz, and their friends end up at the dump, Sid appears again and Woody, Buzz, and the rest of Andy's remaining toys hitch up a ride on his garbage truck to get back to Andy's house.
Toy Story: The Musical[]
“ | I'm the Da Vinci of Destruction. I'm the Van Gogh of Violence. I'm the Rembrandt of Wreckage. I'm a sculptor with the science. | „ |
~ Sid, after he collects Woody and Buzz (Toy Story: The Musical) |
In the Disney Cruise Line musical version of Toy Story, Sid is similar to his own counterpart from the film, even with his film counterpart being placed in certain scenes in the background of the stage. Hannah, his sister, and his dog, Scud, do not appear nor are referenced in the musical. However, Sid is still shown to have his mother.
Sid's defeat is also different compared to the film, as in the musical, Sid is shrunken down to toy size and is ultimately scared by the now life-sized Woody, Buzz, and Mutant Toys. Immediately after their song, Sid runs away in fear upon returning to normal.
Other Appearances[]
Monsters, Inc.: Laugh Factory[]
Sid appears as one of the main antagonists of the Monsters, Inc.: Laugh Factory comic miniseries, though his name is not given during his appearances. He first appears in issue 3, "Toy Worry", where he enters Boo's room through her closet while holding a duffel bag. Claiming he is running from monsters, he asks if he can hide, with Boo agreeing, believing it is a game of hide-and-seek. James P. Sullivan and Mike Wazowski then enter the room looking for Sid, revealing that he has discovered the door network and is using it to steal toys from kids, thus threatening the monster's ability to make kids happy as well as the Monster World in general. Unable to find him, Mike and Sulley leave, and Sid comes out of hiding to thank Boo before leaving himself, though Boo realizes that he had stolen her Jessie doll, and chases after him in her monster disguise.
Boo begins to chase after Sid throughout Monsters, Inc, preparing to tackle him after hitching a ride on George Sanderson's back. However, before she can do so, she is grabbed and scolded by Sulley, giving Sid enough time to escape towards a ventilation shaft, with Mike and Boo coming after him. Mike ends up getting stuck in the vent while Sulley is distracted by Mrs. Nesbitt, though the latter manages to finally apprehend Sid by capturing him in Boo's monster disguise. Mike and Sulley turn Sid over to the CDA, who confesses that, after seeing toys come to life and attack him (referencing the events of Toy Story), he was trying to prevent such a thing from happening to any other children by stealing their toys, while also making money off of any toys that were actually valuable. However, the monsters don't believe his story and toss him back into the Human World through his sister's door.
In the next and final issue, Sid uses the door technology again to return to Monstropolis and breaks Randall Boggs and Henry J. Waternoose III out of prison, who both offer to give him plans for the monsters' door-traveling technology (which he plans to get rich off of in the human world) in exchange for revenge on Sulley and Mike. Sid and the others then kidnap Sulley as he is leaving Boo's house (also having abducted Mike and Celia earlier), not knowing that Boo had snuck in on Sulley's back. As Randall, Waternoose, and a mostly uninterested Sid are deciding on how they will enact their revenge, the monsters try to make Boo laugh in order to reactivate the door so they can escape. The villains quickly realize what their captives are trying to do and attempt to stop them, though fail to keep Boo from laughing at Sulley and Mike being suspended by their legs, resulting in them going after Celia as she escapes with Boo, searching the neighborhood in pursuit of another active door they can use.
Celia and Boo end up bouncing into another child's bedroom after evading Waternoose and Randall, where they are both accosted by Sid until one of the snakes in Celia's hair bites his nose, allowing them to escape through the door. Sid, Randall, and Waternoose then go through the same door after them, only to be confronted by the CDA instead. As a result, Waternoose and Randall are sent back to prison, while Sid is sent back to his own world, with the monsters hoping that he's had enough of them by now and thus won't decide on coming back.
Kingdom Hearts III[]
Although he does not appear or is mentioned in the game, Sid is briefly alluded to in Kingdom Hearts III where Buzz opens his wings to attempt to fly to an upper floor at Galaxy Toys he says attempting so is going to be "rather tricky" to which Woody jokes "too bad we're not strapped to a rocket huh?" to which an annoyed Buzz closed his wings, referencing the time Sid strapped Buzz to a rocket to be blown up in the original Toy Story.

Trivia[]
- Sid is ranked 26th in the Top 30 Disney Villains.
- Sid is the very first main antagonist of a Disney/Pixar film because Toy Story was Pixar's very first film. He is also the first main antagonist of a CGI film because Toy Story was the world's first computer-animated feature film.
- John Lasseter and Andrew Stanton don't consider Sid to be evil.
- In a 2016 interview with some of the key animators of Toy Story, they stated that their primary influence for the character Sid was actually one of the animator's long time childhood friend, Ryan Newbert.
- Sid and Emperor Zurg are the only two classic Toy Story villains to appear in Toy Story 3 (though Sid only appears as a cameo in Toy Story 3).
- Sid is the absolute opposite reflection of Andy. Both are male children, live next door to each other (before Andy moves away at the end of the first film), both grow up and get job occupations in adulthood (Andy goes to college, while Sid gets a job as a garbage man), both have toys by their playful and murderous amusements, one is a good, normal kid, and the other is a delinquent, both have sisters, both have pet dogs, both love going to Pizza Planet, and they both retire or quit doing something that was toy-related (Andy retires from his childhood lifetime of toy playing, while Sid quits his childhood of toy destroying mutilation).
- He could also be a foil to Andy, representing what he would've become if he hadn't reunited with Woody and Buzz.
- Some people have pointed out that the reason behind Sid's sociopathic nature was probably because of a bad home life, especially when it came to his parents. It is implied that his mother was probably negligent when it came to Sid, such as allowing him to play with explosives and letting him skateboard to Pizza Planet all by himself without any legal guardian. There are hints that his alcoholic father may have been abusive, as he is always sleeping on the couch and the massive amount of locks on Sid's bedroom door were probably put to escape away from his abusive dad. The scene where Scud pursues Woody and Buzz throughout the hall until he stops and retreats at the sight of Sid's sleeping father suggests that Scud may have had some awful experiences with him as well.
- Sid is the only known human in the Toy Story quadrilogy who knows that the toys are alive, though Andy Davis' sister, Molly, remains a debatable example as she was an infant in the first film.
- Not counting Al, Sid is the only human villain. Some of his successors, Stinky Pete, Lotso, and Gabby Gabby, are toy villains.
- In a video, Chatter Telephone, one of the characters introduced in Toy Story 3, told Woody the garbage man is Sid, and Lee Unkrich, the director of Toy Story 3, confirmed it.
- As further proof, Sid's name appears during the film credits while Woody and the others read the note from Ken in Bonnie Anderson's house.
- Early sketches and storyboards show that Sid originally straps a rocket to Woody instead of Buzz, intending to blow him up. Not much else is known about this sequence; however, another unknown boy (possibly his best friend) is present with Sid when he's about to light the rocket.
- Early storyboards show that Woody would've walked up to Sid and directly confront him rather than going limb and speaking to him through his voice box after he picks him up.
- In the storyboard of him attempting to blast Buzz off in the sky, he is voiced by a different unidentified actor in line, and he has a mature punk sounding voice as opposed to a voice of a younger kid.
- Toy Story 4 is the only film where Sid wasn't seen or mentioned.
