Lucifer (also known as The Devil or Baphomet, Asmodeus, Diablo or simply Satan) is the main antagonist of the 2006 rock musical comedy film Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny and the 2001 animated comedy music video Fuck Her Gently by Tenacious D. He was also featured, or at least mentioned, in the 2001 song Tribute which had been previously featured in the late 90s Tenacious D TV series, albeit slightly differently.
Originally, he was portrayed by Scott Adsit but voiced by Jack Black in the TV series. He was later portrayed by Dave Grohl in both the Tribute music video and in Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, and his disguise as an Open Mic Host was portrayed by Paul F. Tompkins, who also played Murry Wilson.
Biography[]
Background[]
It was learned that the The Pick of Destiny, was Satan's tooth, created by a dark wizard as a gift to a blacksmith who saved the wizard's life from the great demon. The dark wizard had summoned Satan from Hell in a moment of ego, but had failed to comprehend the consequences of his actions and watched as Satan ravaged the Earth. Unable to stop the foul Beast, the dark wizard fought against Satan's dark powers, which manifested in an army of snakes and flies.
Begging the Devil to end his life, the dark wizard's cries were heard by a blacksmith who rushed to the scene and used his hammer to throw up at the Devil and knock out his tooth. Temporarily powerless, the Devil was weakened and the dark wizard took advantage of the powerless Satan by banishing him back to Hell. However, Satan vowed vengeance and that he would one day return.
Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny[]
Satan eventually escaped Hell through unknown means and disguised himself as an Open Mic Host looking for his missing tooth. He revealed himself to be Satan all along to Jables and Kage at the near end of the movie. He is "complete" when he places the Pick of Destiny back on his broken tooth, regaining the ability to use his supernatural powers on Earth and intending to take over the world and rule it and Hell starting with killing Tenacious D.
To save their lives, Tenacious D challenges Satan to a "rock-off", which he is forced to accept according to the "Demon Code", terms being that he returns to Hell and pays their rent if Tenacious D wins and takes KG as his gay sex slave if they lose. While JB and KG perform admirably, ultimately they lose and Satan attempts to shoot KG with a bolt of lightning. JB jumps in the way, and the bolt bounces off of the mother of pearl inlays in his guitar, blowing off a piece of Satan's horn. JB is able to exploit Satan's "incompleteness" in order to banish him back to Hell, with the devil screaming his vow of vengeance on Tenacious D before being sucked back into Hell.
Tribute[]
Tenacious D sing a story apparently based on true events where they once faced a shiny demon while hitchhiking down a road. The demon ordered them to play the best song in the world or else he would eat their souls, and they did just that, defeating the demon.
This is supposed to be a retelling of their original encounter with Satan in Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, but since both Jables and Kage are quite forgetful, they're not exactly telling the story correctly, but it has been confirmed that this demon is supposed to be Satan himself.
TV series[]
Tribute was also originally featured in the second episode of the Tenacious D TV series (titled "The Greatest Song in the World") that predates both the song's re-release and the Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny film, only that instead of besting the demon with a song, Tenacious D claim that they fought him and beat him in a wrestling match.
Since the demon in the story told within the TV series is played by the same actor as the writer in the episode, it's presumably meant to be a joke about how Tenacious D see the writer, rather than an actual encounter that happened.
Fuck Her Gently[]
A similar albeit slightly different version of Satan appears in Tenacious D's Fuck Her Gently animated music video. Tenacious D themselves appear as angels before him, educating him on how to better improve lovemaking with his wife.
Satan is enraged when he realizes they just came to his home to make love to his wife but the angels and the wife ascend into Heaven, the light from which shines so brightly it melts Satan, and the video ends with the wife having been converted into an angel.

- Though he has appeared numerous times throughout Tenacious D's history, he has only been a true physical threat in the Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny movie.
- In the TV series, when the Devil commands Jack and Kyle to play the best song in the world, Kyle begins playing "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin.
- Curiously, Scott Adsit, after portraying the demon in the Tenacious D TV series, later portrayed Bill the Demon in Stan Against Evil. Similarly, Dave Grohl who also played him later played Satan again in a Jimmy Kimmel Live sketch.
