Richard Nixon is the overarching antagonist of Watchmen. He is the five year-running president of the United States, with America descending into chaos under his leadership.
Personality[]
He shows very little personality in the book, but from what is seen he’s charismatic and manipulative, with a cruel side, who is fine with murder if it benefits him.
Biography[]
He was guarded by the Comedian in Texas at the day Kennedy was assassinated. He later was elected president, and asked Dr. Manhattan to intervene in the Vietnam War, causing it to be swiftly and quickly ended. After that, he used the Comedian to intervene and kill anything that could be a problem, causing him to get elected repeatedly for 5 years. During these years, crime rates boosted rapidly, with police doing very little to stop them.
After Doctor Manhattan left for Mars, he discussed in a private room with Army generals about the Cold War. When Pakistan called for help from the Russians, Nixon stated that ‘[America] would consider her options’. When the fight spilled into Pakistan, America responded with maximum force.
After America was devastated by Veidt’s Squid Attacks, Nixon cancelled DEFCON 2, it’s America and Russia agreeing to cease all fighting and form an alliance against the supposed Alien invaders.
Trivia[]
- In the book, he supposedly leads 5 terms, which is against United States law in real life. This implies that it’s possible he changed the law during his second term. This is more explicit in the Watchmen Companion, where he is stated as having amended the Constitution.
