Retainers are supporting antagonists in the Madness Combat web series. They are a group Half-Mags - Mag Agents who seem to be in the middle of the magnification procedure - charged with guarding The Other Place, a dimension where those killed in Nevada or S-3LFs are sent similar to Hell/the Underworld. They also seem to be among the highest-ranking soldiers of the A.A.H.W., occupying a rank higher than the A.T.P. Engineers and Soldats. A Retainer designated as "Retainer #909" serves as one of the two main antagonists of Madness Combat 9.5 alongside Tricky.
Description[]
Retainers are Half-Mags, and as such are larger than the average character. They wear a distinctive, intimidating mask with red lenses that resemble angrily glaring eyes. This mask, which covers most of the Retainer's facial cross, is implied to be surgically implanted, as suggested by a pair of wires attached to a metal plate on the side of their head. They also have what appears to be burn marks on their face behind the mask, and wear a jacket over their suit.
Retainers' purpose is to "retain" S-3LFs who tries to leave The Other Place and keep them from escaping. They are summoned when someone causes a major enough disruption in The Other Place to the point where heavy force is warranted to keep things under control. They fulfill this with the use of psionics, which enables them to fly, teleport, use telekinesis, and summon spikes, as well as having the ability to regenerate any damage sustained to them.
Biography[]
Retainer #909 appears before Hank J. Wimbleton after he fought his way through numerous Agents in The Other Place. Emerging on an elevator platform, the Retainer engaged Hank to prevent him from leaving The Other Place. With his immense strength and psionic abilities, #909 quickly got the better of Hank, knocking him outside the room with a powerful punch. The Retainer pursued Hank as he continued his killing spree against more post-living A.A.H.W. units, knocking him off the platform he was on, then launching a number of stones at the ground to trap him. After Hank hit the ground followed by the stones, the Retainer pulled him out of the floor to finish him off, grabbing hold of his metal jaw.
Retainer #909 reappears during a confrontation with Tricky and Hank (specifically the incarnation (theorized to be a S-3LF fragment) of Hank seen in Antipathy) and knocked him around with his immense strength and teleportation, but before he could retain Hank, Tricky ironically retained him with his titular stop sign before banishing him. The Retainer attempts to impale Hank from behind, but the ladder dodges just in time and summoned more A.A.H.W. units. Hank fired several shots at #909, but the ladder didn't even react, resulting in Hank shoving the gun's handle into the back of his head. Before #909 could grab hank, Tricky grabbed and threw him into the nearby wall, leading to the Retainer impaling Tricky. Hank manages to impale the Retainer's brain, still to no avail, though Tricky was able to distract the ladder, tough not to much affect. Having adapted to #909's teleportation, Hank manages to outwit the Retainer, giving Tricky enough time to retrieve and use a chainsaw against him. After Hank made it to the next room, the remains of #909's body were thrown through the door, confirming the Retainer's demise.
Later on, the Consternation Hank who was previously attacked by #909 was revealed to have survived. Though he had sustained multiple grievous injuries during the confrontation, these didn't prevent him from immediately resuming his plans to fight anyone who got in his way, including the Antipathy Hank.
Trivia[]
- When asked why a Retainer appeared to confront[Hank in his journey in The Other Place but not Deimos, Krinkels answered "You gotta f*ck around a LOT for a retainer to be summoned. That, and Deimos isn't the same as hank. Hank is a serious problem."
- The description for Madness Combat 9.5 Part 2 implies that the Retainers are given orders by the Higher Powers.
- Some of the code visible at the end of Madness Combat 9.5 implies that a Retainer cannot be permanently killed, with the code making reference to "reactivating" a "damaged" Retainer (presumably the one Tricky killed in the episode, referred to as "Disabling" the Retainer).
