Phoenix Ikki was one of the major characters in Saint Seiya. He was the leader of the Black Saints and was also the first antagonist in series and later became an anti-hero throughout the remainder of the series sometimes helping Seiya and his friends fight against powerful opponents.

In the original anime he was voiced by Hideyuki Hori, who also voiced Captain Ginyu in Dragon Ball Z and Ryuga in Hokuto no Ken. In the live action film Saint Seiya: The Beginning, under the name of Nero, he was played by Diego Tinoco.

Biography[]

Ikki was one of the one hundred fatherless children under the care of Mitsumasa Kido, sent to train in search of a cloth, to become the saints of Athena. Different from the other 98 orphans, Ikki has a brother named Shun who often gets bullied for being weak he often comes to save Shun whenever he is teased. After much training in the Grand Foundation, it comes time to decide where each orphan goes to train, but Shun ended up being confirmed to be sent to Death Queen Island (which was said to be a Hell on Earth and that nobody has came back alive and that death will most come most likely). But Ikki intervened to prevent his younger brother from going to the island and taking his place instead (his brother was later sent to Andromeda Island).

On Death Queen Island, Ikki goes through extremely harsh training with his master but later meets a slave girl (who was mentioned as his master's daughter in the anime) that has a similar look with his brother but only female, with whom he falls in love with. However, during his final day in training, his master ended up killing the girl causing Ikki to arouse hatred in his heart, forgetting his humble nature and preached protection of his brothers and began violently beating his master to death. Before his master died, he tells him that Mitsumasa Kido, who rejected the tutelage of their children put them at the orphanage, to turn holy and promote the Galactic Wars.

But Mitsumasa died during the period when Ikki trained, and so Ikki after getting the phoenix cloth decides to kill everyone that is connected to Kido, Saori, Seiya, Saori's butler, the other bronze saints, and even his brother: Shun. Ikki came across some Black Saints who attacked him at first but he instantly defeats them with ease, and then he defeats their leader, Jango and later banished him from the island, and then ultimately taking control of the Black Saints, becoming their new leader.

Ikki takes the Phoenix Cloth and goes to the headquarters of the Galactic Wars in Japan along with some Black Phoenixes and watched as Seiya and the other bronze saints fight each other. Until when it comes time for Shun to fight against his opponent, Shun's chains began to sense Ikki's hatred and malice, causing them to react to his presence, and then Ikki finally shows himself looking down at Shun. Shun seemed very happy to see him again, but Ikki was shown to be disgusted with Shun and then he suddenly punched his brother in the shoulder. He then comes down on to the stage and faced against his own opponent in the tournament which he instantly defeats with ease.

When Seiya tried to interfere, the Black Phoenixes appeared and then stood behind Seiya and his friends to prevent them from trying to attack Ikki.

He spared Seiya's life and took the Gold Cloth with him as he plans to use to gain power. But first, he wants revenge on the descendants of Kido. After Ikki and his Black saints left the Galaxian Wars, he was later found trying to put on the Sagittarius cloth in which Seiya then stops him from trying to put on the gold cloth. With his plan briefly thwarted Ikki broke up the cloth into pieces and gave them to his black phoenixes and ran off in the dock. After all the black phoenixes were defeated, he gave the remaining pieces to the four black saints (Black Pegasus, Black Dragon, Black Andromeda, and Black Cygnus) and keeps the last piece to himself.

After the death of Black Cygnus, he received the remains of the Black Cygnus which the remains informed him about what Cygnus Hyoga was capable of, upon knowing about Hyoga's abilities, he was then confronted by Hyoga. The two fought against each other and then after a brief fight, Ikki ended up mentally breaking Hyoga putting him into a vulnerable state before he defeated Hyoga by punching a hole into his chest.

After all the Black Saints were defeated, the four Bronze Saints made a final confrontation with Ikki surrounding him from all directions. Hyoga began to fight Ikki for the second time and then Hyoga deflected his punch hitting him back in the face and knocking out his consciousness for a while, but Shun however prevents Hyoga from finishing him off, resulting in Ikki regaining his consciousness and then punches right back into the hole on Hyoga's chest and ripping a cross out.

Ikki then uses his power and caused all four Bronze saints to go flying into the air as he goes in and beats up every single one of them. After knocking out all the bronze saints, he looked over at the Gold cloth only to find Seiya being protected by the cloth leading to a final battle between Ikki and Seiya, but each time, Seiya does his meteor punch, Ikki either ends up dodging it or just instantly blocking it. But however, Seiya began laying massive blows on to Ikki resulting in his cloth being damaged, but later realized that his cloth can actually regenerate, continuing the fight between him and Seiya.

After the battle, Ikki ends up being defeated by Seiya and the other saints. Ikki tells them about how his life was like when he was training in Death Queen Island. The saints were later confronted by Lizard Misty (in the manga) who came and caused an earthquake on the mountain. Ikki later dies in the destruction in the Mount Fuji earthquake.

In the anime, the saints were confronted by Docrates who also sent out his forces to steal the gold cloth and fight against the Bronze saints, Docrates then asked Ikki to had over the last piece of the Gold cloth in which Ikki refused and tossed it over to Seiya enraging Docrates in the process, he then punches the mountain causing it to collapse and bury Docrates and his minions alive. After Seiya and his friends made their escape, Ikki was then left behind to end up getting buried alive under the destruction of the mountain dying immediately.

Ikki was later revived as a servant of Athena, and admits to being the most emotionally weakest of all the saints, he thought he lived in Hell. Ikki later became an ally of Seiya and his friends often coming to fight against powerful opponents whenever they're in trouble.
