~ Dr. Mason Wren. |
Dr. Mason Wren is one of the two main antagonists (along with the Cloned Queen) of the 1997 science-fiction horror film Alien Resurrection. A scientist on the ship Auriga, he was the one who cloned Ripley and recreated the Xenomorphs.
He was portrayed by the late J. E. Freeman.
Biography[]
Wren is one of the scientists aboard the USM Auriga and the head of a project to resurrect Ellen Ripley and the Xenomorph Queen incubating within her chest. After ten years, a perfect clone was created, known as Ripley 8. After surgically removing the queen in its chestburster state, Wren decides to leave Ripley 8 alive for further study. During a psychological examination, Ridley 8 shatters Dr. Sprague's arm, forcing Wren to sedate her.
Becoming fascinated with the Cloned Queen's potential, Wren has multiple humans kidnapped by mercenaries of the Betty to use as hosts for more aliens to study from. Then he catches Annalee Call attempting to sabotage the program by attempting to kill Ripley 8 and confronts the mercenaries in the mess hall. Enraged of them bringing a "terrorist" on board, Wren decides to have the whole team executed. However, the team rebelled and killed the soldiers, leaving only Wren and Distephano alive to help them navigate through the Auriga.
While maneuvering through the ship as the Xenomorphs break through their enclosures, the group makes their way through a flooded kitchen. At the top of a lift, Call gives Wren a pistol to open a lock so they can escape from incoming Xenomorphs. Wren instead shoots Call, sending her into the water, and exits through the hatch and closes it behind him, leaving the others behind to die so he could use the Betty to escape to Earth. But Call, having survived her wound as she was an Auton, accessed the central computer and blocked access to Betty, while also sending the Auriga on a collision course towards Earth to destroy all remaining Xenomorphs.
Once the crew manage to reach Betty, Wren ambushes them as he took an alternate route, holding Call hostage. Wren sadistically (and somewhat idiotically) boasted his intentions of continuing his research on Earth, despite the uncontrollable nature of the Xenomorphs. Wren is attacked by Purvis, one of the prisoners used as a subject for the Xenomorphs. After a brawl, Purvis forces the doctor's head to his chest, allowing the Chestburster to burst through Purvis' chest and Wren's head, killing them both. Ironically, he died by the same creatures he tries so hard to recreate.
