Zegin Highline is the main antagonist of the 2001 video game Hunter X Hunter: Altar of the Dragon Vein, one of the first games of the Hunter X Hunter franchise. He was once a Ruins Hunter and an examiner for the 282nd Hunter Exam, and ends up getting his license revoked after he tries to cause a murder riot over all the participants he faced.

He was voiced by Yuji Kishi in Japanese (who also voiced Polpo and Formaggio in GioGio's Bizarre Adventure and Devoin Jojo´s Bizarre Adventure: Heritage for the Future)

Appearance[]

Zegin is a young man of average build and height. He crimson red hair with 2 bangers on the side. The left with a short banger, while the right side is longer, as well black eyes a pair of glasses. He wears a white cloak with navy blue edges, white pants, and a cape that is attached to his blazer with the same pattern and same color.

Biography[]

Not much is known about Zegin's past, but it was stated that he manages to pass the 275th Hunter Exam and was licensed as a Ruins Hunter due to his skills. During the 282nd Hunter Exam, Zegin was one of the few players who plans on killing many participants who ends up trying to face him in battle

He manages to kill many people during his trial, and one of the participants was Sabaki's father. He ends up losing his license and was arrested due to his actions, But despite this, he remains to be a hunter due to how many hunters were responsible for themselves.

He then managed to break out and escape which caused him to become a bounty for whoever found him. He then recruited Amane and Sabaki, who wants vengeance to get the Dragon Vein to avoid any responsibilities to achieve true freedom.

He then left a message to Gon and Kurapika who entered his mansion, he tells them that his allies told him they were coming to his mansion and praised their skills before he introduced himself. He tells them they are enemies given they're both here for one reason, when Kurapika tells him what was his motive, he simply states that he just wanted "freedom" by obtaining the Dragon Vein. After this, Gon and Killua were then engaged in combat where they have to fight Zegin's minions.

After Gon and Kurapika encountered him and his team escaping, he is surprised to see them come out just in time. He then expresses joy when seeing Kurapika getting angry before telling them their goal is the contents hidden in the ruins, and stating they shouldn't waste their time as he and his team went off to find the last ring needed. Before he leaves he tells them that the hunters will find the ring before him while suggesting that they should enjoy the hunt before leaving in a vehicle.

To obtain all the rings, He had Amane take the last ring away from Gon and Kurapika while he boarded the airship, this end sup with Amane getting betrayed by Sabaki. In the airship, he killed many Hunters in the ship and ends up encountering Menchi, which ends up both of them fighting each other which leads to Menchi almost getting killed until Satotz and Buhara came to help Menchi saying that he has no intention of harming all of them unless they try and stop him as they let him go.

He meets Netero in his office, asking him if he remembered who he is before Netero brought up what he did in the 282nd Hunter Exam, laughing pleasingly. He asks Netero to hand over the ring from Underground Cavern ruins and even states that he had no right to refuse as he will blackmail him and threaten him on killing everyone inside the airship with his Nen. He also states that he prefers to keep his next choice of victims to a minimum as it would then give him a hard time finding the ring.

After Netero gives him the ring, he questions him about what's in the Forest Ruins with Zegin responding that there is an Altar that receives all the energy from the Dragon Vein. Although Netero confirms whether or not Nen or Ki is the same thing, he wants to confirm once he enters the ruins while he is continuing monologuing with Netero about the very words he said after he passed the Hunter Exam. Before he leaves, he tells him that he doesn't mind the Hunters coming after him as a rival and judges them if they're up for the challenge.

He then makes his way into the ruins as both Killua and Leorio attempted to stop him. He then questions if they made it here with an expectation of discovering ancient history or returning the treasure to obtain any reward and stated that he has no interest in the threat of telling them to stay out of his way. When Killua said that they are only here to investigate the ruins, even if they know that the Dragon Vein is inside, he can't let Zegin mess with it.

After he explains how the shamans and priests never knew about Nen and attempt to absorb all the Dragon Vein's energy for himself, he then reassures both Killua and Leorio that he's not doing everything only for world domination but the concept that all hunters endeared for with no one standing in their way, freedom. He then states that he wanted these powers for him to do whatever he likes, obtaining and learning everything and whatever he wanted, only for Killua to call him out that he's only doing this for selfishness. A trio of bulky man blocks their path as Zegin enters the dungeon to get the altar and tells Killua and Leorio that they are free to follow him since they have freedom.

Inside the room that has the Dragon Vein Altar, he uses the rings to absorb the energy until Sabaki stops him. Sabaki then tries to keep up his façade while covering up that he got rid of Amane as Zegin questioned. He laughs at Sabaki's acting skills due to already knowing that he killed Amane when he gets the feeling about the latter from the very start. He also knew that Sabaki would kill him to get revenge and continued mocking him before Sabaki asked him if he remembers what he did in the 282nd Hunter Exam.

He tells him that he has killed all the participants in the exams to search for a certain type of Nen in his interest and was disappointed due to one of the participants not even withstanding his Nen, even believing not a single participant would pass the Secret Nen Exam. When Sabaki mentions how his father left him and his mother to become a hunter before he gets killed by Zegin, and even has a hatred for them, Zegin relied upon that he moved by his unfortunately sad story. Sabaki then used his blades to kill Zegin as he closes the Altar.

Zegin however, survived the attack and explained why the shamans and priests sacrificed themselves and how one can just absorb the earth's aura by one aura being blocked, he then thanked Sabaki for his assistance as he then absorb the aura from the Dragon Vein Altar before taunting Sabaki on dying alongside his father for his sake. Sabaki tries to kill him, but Zegin laughs when he attacked him which leads to him being both unconscious and injured.

After Hisoka and Satotz arrived at the altar witnessed and sees Zegin fully powered. He then monologues about freedom being vague as he is doing this to something freely with has responsibilities, which constrains the meaning of its contradictory, being forced to apologize for stealing and was forced to repent on his killings until he obtained power from the Alter. He also claimed that he will kill the owners that he stole and those who wanted revenge on him to overcome those responsibilities and have no consequences on him, stating that this is the true meaning of freedom.

As Hisoka prepares to fight Zegin, he shows him what his meaning of freedom is and what it feels like before fighting him. With him getting beaten, he said it was impossible before he decides to absorb more energy from the altar which leads to him getting stronger until Sabaki destroys the Earth's Aura. Because of this, he kicks Sabaki before deciding to find another Alter and kill all the hunters who stood in his way of finding freedom.

After getting defeated by Hisoka (who turns out to be the player character) Zegin then dies as a result not being able to handle the energy within him, while at the same the explosion of his Nen caused the ruins begins to collapse, as Satotz escape from the ruins alongside Hisoka while carrying Sabaki's unconscious body.
