Fargo Boyle is the main antagonist of the Irish comedy Father Ted episode 'Chirpy Burpee Cheap Sheep'. He is a sheep farmer on Craggy Island who convinces Ted and Dougal to help Chris the Sheep recover from his nervous troubles, but secretly was the one responsible in order to stage a miraculous recovery and increase the sheep's odds at the King of the Sheep competition.

He was portrayed by the late Paedar Lamb.

Personality[]

Fargo is initially shown to be a worrisome and nervous individual who confides in Ted to tell him of his troubles. However, this was just a ruse to trick him into giving him an advantage over the other competitors. He is actually a greedy, manipulative and cowardly man who tricks people into doing his dirty work. He was clearly ignorant of the psychological torment he was inflicting onto Chris and only cared to gain the fame and fortune from winning the competition. During his villainy, he is shown to be knowledgeable with the criminal world of Craggy Island as he develops a working relationship with Giant Reed and Hudd Hastings by paying them lots to torment Chris.

However, by the end of the episode, he shows at least some regret for his actions as he gets upset and regretful over the exploitation of his beloved farm animal.

Biography[]

Fargo is first seen in the tent of the King of the Sheep competition talking to Giant Reed and Hudd Hastings. He secretly pays them a large sum of money to scare Chris into thinking that there is a deadly beast on the prowl hunting sheep on Craggy Island. He then meets with Ted and pretends to act proud of Chris to cover his tracks. Ted even had so much faith in Chris winning the competition that he bet his entire heating allowance for the Winter that he would win, much to Fargo's disbelief.

Later on, Ted receives a distressing call from Fargo stating that the talk of the Beast has scared Chris so much that he has started burping uncontrollably. Much to his apparent relief, Ted agrees to work with Chris to restore him to his former self along with the help of Dougal so that he can stay in the competition. As a precaution, Ted goes with Dougal to John and Mary's shop to try and get the betting money back just in case Chris doesn't win. When the duo arrive, they see Fargo sadly leaving the shop concealing something under his jacket.

Ted gets frustrated that the bet can't be refunded and Dougal is annoyed that the BBC Sound Effects Volume 4 isn't there. Fargo later arrives at the Parochial House with Chris to get him started on his training. A training montage shows Chris getting all kinds of therapy and treatment for his recovery including listening to calming music, sent onto a boating lake and even being submerged in an isolation tank. However, Dougal accidentally leaves the front door open allowing Chris to escape the house. Ted and Dougal look at each other in horror as the sound of the beast echoes through the night. Luckily, Chris is found by Dougal nearby and the sound of the howling was actually coming from a stereo placed in a tree. Ted then realizes what is going on and heads to the competition to confront Fargo.

Just as the trophy was being handed to Fargo by the judge, Ted bursts into the tent and tells everyone that he was lying and cheating. He reveals that Fargo bought the sound effects album to scare Chris into thinking the beast was real, lowering his money odds and then staging a miraculous recovery to get more from the betting money. Everyone looks at Fargo in shame as he approaches Chris and apologises to him in a fit of despair. Despite Ted stopping Fargo from getting away from it, he realises that he has lost all of his money on the bet due to forfeit, forcing Ted and Dougal to hibernate through the winter in regret.

It's unknown what happened to Fargo after the events of the episode, but it is assumed he either had Chris taken away or went to prison for his crimes.

Trivia[]

  • Fargo is one of the only antagonists other than Pat Mustard to not be a part of the church, such as Father Dick Byrne.
  • He is also seemingly the only antagonist to redeem himself or show regret for his actions, whilst others were simply arrested or killed.
