The Devil You Do or the Devil You Don't is the seventh episode of Survivor 42. This and the previous episode "You Can't Hide on Survivor" were aired together in a two-hour event.

Immunity Challenge: A Bit Tipsy
The contestants must stack blocks in a tower on a wobbly platform. They had to pull on a rope to keep the table balanced while retrieving their blocks. The first contestant to stack their blocks to spell "IMMUNITY" and return to the starting position wins immunity.
Additional Stipulation: Because Rocksroy destroyed the hourglass on Exile Island to reverse the results of the previous challenge, the winning team from that challenge will have the immunity part of their win stripped away from them and be transferred to the losing team and Rocksroy himself, thus forcing the winning team to compete for individual immunity.

Behind the Scenes[]
- Before Tribal Council, Maryanne and Omar agreed on "pineapple pizza" as a codeword to signal to play her idol if he could not rally the votes to save her.[2]
- On her way out of the Tribal Council set, Lydia was able to hear the final eleven castaways celebrate making the merge.[3]
- In an exit interview, Rocksroy explained his vote against Lindsay, stating that he wished to send a message that Lindsay was a major threat.[4] In the game, the tribe believed it was Maryanne that cast this vote, and Lindsay and Omar did not believe her truthful recount that she voted for Lydia.
Other[]
- This episode tied the record set in "There's Gonna Be Blood" for most castaways with individual immunity at the same Tribal Council, with 7. The record would later be tied again in "Mergatory".
- Omar becomes the first person to be ineligible to vote at a Tribal Council where he has individual immunity.
- Each member of the original Ika tribe voted against a different player. Aside from tribes that merged with only two members, this is the first episode where this has happened since "The Merger" with the original Pagongs.
- Hai is the only eligible castaway this episode to not have a vote cast against him.
- This is the second episode in which all but one of the eligible castaways received votes, after "The Finish Line Is in Sight".
- For the first time this season, Vati is outnumbered by the other two starting tribes.
- As a result of Shot in the Dark plays and tie votes occurring at previous Tribal Councils, this is the first episode of Survivor 42 where the eliminated contestant was never rendered ineligible to vote at the Tribal Council where they were eliminated.
