X-Wing Rogue Squadron 11, also labeled as "Battleground: Tatooine, Chapter 3", is the eleventh issue in the Star Wars: X-Wing Rogue Squadron series of comics. It was released on August 14, 1996 by Dark Horse Comics.

Publisher's summary[]

Jabba the Hutt is dead, and in the ensuing scramble for power, a secret Imperial weapons cache could be the key to victory. But only one being alive knows the location of the hidden weapons cache -- Firith Olan. While that makes Firith a very powerful being, it also makes him a prime target. In a desperate race to uncover the missing weapons, as the criminals converge to fill the role of the dead Hutt, Wedge and Rogue Squadron find themselves smack in the middle of Battleground: Tatooine!

Plot summary[]

As Rogue Squadron engages Imperial TIE fighters and Firith Olan's TIE Interceptors, the discover that the recently arrived Imperials are only concerned with targeting Olan's forces. Rogue Squadron decides not to risk intercepting Olan's freighter and retreat to Tatooine's surface, while the Imperials, commanded by Captain Marl Semtin of the Star Destroyer Harrow, want Olan alive, deciding to intercept him on his homeworld of Ryloth.

The Rogues Wedge Antilles, Tycho Celchu and Elscol Loro accompany Winter to capture Olan on Ryloth as well. Arriving at the Kala'uun starport, the Rogues give starport master Koh'shak a "docking fee" of exorbitant gifts. Elsewhere, Olan meets with Cazne'olan, head of the Olan clan, who wants to give up Olan to either the Empire or the Alliance. Cazne'olan orders a contest judged by Koh'shak to decide which faction will win Olan, where Antilles and Winter are pitted against the imposing Imperial operatives Sixtus Quin and Septaas.

The four combatants are transported to Ryloth's hazardous surface to capture a golden globe some distance away. Each are given a traditional lyaer-tsa and are told to only inflict non-lethal damage on their opponents. As the contest begins, Quin and Septaas strike the Rogues and gain a head start, but Septaas is impaled by a wild lylek. Antilles and Winter battle the creature, where despite Winter's protests, Antilles saves her life at the expense of allowing Quin to capture the globe. At that moment, a Ryloth heat storm begins, incinerating the three remaining combatants.

The four combatants awaken and realize that the contest was a simulation. Quin regards the Rogues well, satisfied with their demonstration of honor. Elsewhere, Firith Olan tortures Bib Fortuna, telling Fortuna of his plan to trade him for his own freedom. Olan is confronted by a shadowed figure with a blaster and escapes imprisonment.

Koh'shak is ordered to close the portcullis, as Olan has escaped, apparently aided by the Imperials. Koh-shak ignores the request, keeping the port open for Imperial entry, as Captain Semtin had gifted him a tunic made of koolach silk. Quin is insulted by the lack of honor exhibited by his superiors and defects, asking Antilles if he will give himself and his deserted Imperial allies a chance to do what is right.

Hauling the Imperial troopers off of Ryloth, Celchu asks Winter if she would have saved Antilles in the contest. Winter asserts that she would have prioritized the globe, as that was what the mission dictated. Celchu proposes that Winter's name came from her cold disposition, or the "ice water" in her veins. Asserting that he needs no other surprises when they get back to Tatooine, Fortuna in his walker droid lurks above them in the ship's cockpit.
