Sten Thanas was an Imperial officer from a long line of military officers (including Pter Thanas). Serving on the Hydra as a part of Admiral Daala's fleet, he was the first mate until the ship's captain was killed in an accident in a turbolift. Captain Thanas was killed when Han Solo piloted the Sun Crusher through the Hydra 's bridge, completely destroying the vessel.
