"Lord Sidious, we have located Naboo's chief supply center. It seems that all materials that are collected on Naboo are sent through this location, stored temporarily in spaceports before being sent offworld. Our blockade stops these resources from being transported away, and thus, their stockpiles must be overflowing."

Spinnaker was a coastal city on Naboo, inhabited by the Human Naboo. It contained several spaceports which were used to store goods before transportation offworld. Spinnaker rested on the southern side of the bay, with a trading town on the opposite end. The city was also northeast of the base of the Naboo Royal Navy, and north of a Naboo village. Spinnaker was separated into two sections by a canal. It contained numerous military and defensive buildings, and also had its own navy.

In 32 BBY, Spinnaker was targeted by the Trade Federation for its stockpiles of nova crystals, which had inundated Spinnaker's spaceports following the Federation's blockade of the planet. The B1-series battle droid OOM-9 and the Trade Federation Droid Army captured the village south of Spinnaker and used it as a staging ground for the invasion of Spinnaker. Forces of the Royal Naboo Security Forces tried to retake the village but were unsuccessful.

Spinnaker was a major city[2] on the planet Naboo. It was loyal to the Royal House of Naboo and inhabited by a population of the Human Naboo[1] called the Spinnakerians.[3] The city served as Naboo's main supply center, and it contained multiple spaceports which served as storage for Naboo's exported goods before they could be sent offworld. The city was tended to by PKN-49 worker droids. It was also defended by infantry forces and vehicles,[1] along with a sub-unit of the Naboo Royal Navy called the Spinnaker Navy which protected the bay.[3] Spinnaker was a short distance from the Human capital Theed.[1]

A coastal city that stretched around a large bay on the northeast, Spinnaker was also surrounded by other Naboo settlements, including a trading town on the other side of the bay, to the south and southeast of the city a Naboo village and the base of the Naboo Royal Navy were located respectively, with paths from Spinnaker leading to each. The edges of Spinnaker that connected to the bay were covered by decorative guardrails, while the southern areas were blocked by treelines and walls with gated entrances at the pathways. The city was separated in two by a canal that ran from the bay to the southeast, with a bridge from the western section connected to a short pathway to the eastern section.[1]

The eastern area of Spinnaker

The eastern section had three gates, one on the path leading to the other section, one leading south to the village, and another further west leading to the southeast. The area behind the easternmost gate included a War Center, two houses, two turrets, an anti-air turret, and an obelisk monument. The area above the second gate included a command center, surrounded by buildings including a Heavy Weapons Factory, a mech factory, a Research Center, a power core, and a gazebo. In between the second and third gates, the city contained fourteen prefab shelters, two fortresses, two towers. two power cores, an anti-air turret, a gazebo, a research center, and a temple. The area of Spinnaker behind the westernmost gate held a shield generator, a spaceport, three turrets, and three prefab shelters. In total, there were five shipyards and three AquaHarvesters on the bay of the eastern section. Each shipyard was adjacent to one of four promontories on the bay. The two easternmost promontories each contained a tower.[1]

Western section[]

The western portion of Spinnaker

The western section of Spinnaker had two gates in close proximity, with one adjacent to the bridge to the eastern section and the other leading south. The gates led initially to a mostly enclosed square-shaped area. The area closest to the gates contained a turret and six prefab shelters. In the northeast direction, the city contained a war center, a power core, a troop center, three houses, two prefab shelters, a monument, a mech factory, two towers, an airbase, and a turret. The central area of the square held a monument, a shield generator, a spaceport, a power core, and a fortress. Adjacent to the western gate, there were six prefab shelters and a house. The western portion of the square closet to the southern wall was blocked by a temple, a turret, and two houses. Next to them, in northward order, stood a house, a troop center, a fortress, two houses, two prefab shelters, an animal nursery, another troop center, and a power core.[1]

Northeast of the square, the city had three more promontories, two of which had a shipyard each. The third promontory was much shorter than the others, and was distinct in that it had an archway leading into the open water. The city extended further north, starting with a mech factory and a tower directly north of the square. Further north of those buildings were located a command center, a spaceport, three prefab shelters, and a power core, three houses, an anti-air turret, and a food processing center. Another two promontories streched east into the bay, with each containing a turret and a shipyard located between them. Three further AquaHarvesters were also located in the western area of the bay.[1]

The archways to the western side of the city led to a wide square body of water surrounded by guardrails, which had in its center a small island containing a gazebo, trees, and flowers. Each side of the body of water had an archway a short distance away, with the northwestern and southwestern arches standing over paths that led directly into thick treelines, while the northeastern archway led to another section of Spinnaker. The space between the archways was occupied by grass-covered mounds with flowers and trees.[1]

Trade Federation hub[]

During the Invasion of Naboo by the Trade Federation, a base commanded by the B1-series battle droid YIN-762 was established. The Trade Federation Droid Army captured the city in the invasion of Spinnaker, and much of the city was razed and the remainder was turned into a Federation base.[1]

History[]

Village defence

Spinnaker's forces tried to retake the southern village from the Trade Federation.

Between 67 and 65 BBY, representatives from the InterGalactic Banking Clan, including Larsh Hill, met with Naboo's king, Bon Tapalo, to discuss building proposals for Naboo. One such proposal made by Hill concerned the opening of a second commercial spaceport in Spinnaker.[4] In 32 BBY, the Trade Federation launched a blockade of Naboo, preventing the offworld transport of goods stored at Spinnaker. When the company later invaded the planet, Trade Federation Viceroy Nute Gunray sought proof of the invasion's profitability, placing the B1-series battle droid OOM-9 in charge of capturing Spinnaker after the droid's successful attack on the city Harte Secur. OOM-9's battle droids began the attack by capturing the village south of Spinnaker.[1]

A group of Spinnakerians outside the city attacked the village with three heavy V-19 landspeeders, four Heavy Champion repulsorcrafts, and two Steadfast tanks, all of which were destroyed by the Trade Federation. As OOM-9 consolidated the village's defences, forces from the city made another unsuccessful attack, consisting of eight royal troopers,[1] four heavy Tuskcat Troopers,[5] six heavy V-19 landspeeders, two Champions, and one Steadfast.[1] The Trade Federation eventually eliminated Spinnaker's ground forces by sending five labor droids to build a turret and a carbon processing center on the path between Spinnaker and the village. The remaining forces inside the city left to attack the labor droids, only to be eliminated by the turret and OOM-9's light Droid Starfighters.[3]

Pummels burn Spinnaker

OOM-9's pummels destroy Spinnaker's fortresses

After destroying the Naboo Royal Navy's base, the droids turned to Spinnaker and began its destruction by targeting the outer turrets in the southwestern section with starfighters, while their ground forces breached the walls in that section. The fighters proceeded to the bay while avoiding the anti-air turrets so that they could destroy several buildings and the Spinnaker Navy's boats,[3] which included four destroyers, two cruisers, and five Light Scouts.[3] OOM-9 also used droidekas to protect at least three energy pummels so that they could destroy the anti-air defences, including the fortresses. The pummels also destroyed much of the city while enduring significant damage from the turrets. The droids left the spaceports of Spinnaker intact so that they could collect the nova crystals stored in them through Neimoidian traders, a type of cargo hovercraft.[3] After OOM-9 had acquired 10,000 nova crystals, Gunray congratuled him on his victory.

With Spinnaker occupied, the Trade Federation's next move was to capture Theed. They built a Neimoidian Throne on the ruins of the city as a symbol of their occupation and built Camp 14 next to the town to the north of Spinnaker, where Naboo and Gungan prisoners were held. The Naboo Resistance continued fighting near the city, and it was eventually liberated by the Gungan Grand Army.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Spinnaker was first mentioned in Prima Games' Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds: Prima's Official Strategy Guide, written by Steven L. Kent and published on November 7, 2001,[6] as a supplementary guide for the the LucasArts video game Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds,[1] which was released on November 11 of that year.[7] In the game, the city first appears in the third level of the Trade Federation campaign, "Spinnaker's Spoils," in which the player controls the Droid Army and has to gather 10,000 nova crystals to complete the level.[1]

Spinnaker's Spoils[]

The strategy guide has some differences between the released version of the game. It recommends that the player destroy the Spinnaker Navy's anti-air destroyers,[3] but none are present in the level.[1] Regarding Spinnaker's spaceports, the strategy guide recommends that the player should not destroy them so that they can continue trading for their nova crystals, and suggests that destroying them could cause the player to fail the level. It also states that the player has to destroy them at the conclusion of the level to complete it.[3] However, in Galactic Battlegrounds, the level's instructions state that the player needs to replace the spaceports in Spinnaker with their own, and the player receives large quantities of nova crystals if they destroy a spaceport, and the level automatically concludes once the player has 10,000 nova crystals.[1]

Spinnaker's forces in the level change depending on the difficulty level selected. In easy mode, Spinnaker only has its navy and four V-19 landspeeders. In moderate and hard difficulty, eight troopers, four Tuskcat Troopers, four heavy landspeeders, two Champions, and one Steadfast are all stationed inside the city and attack the player after they take the southern village. The hard difficulty mode also adds three V-19 landspeeders, four Heavy Champions, and two Steadfasts, which are stationed outside Spinnaker.[1] This article follows the portrayal in hard difficulty mode. Unused dialogue spoken by Nute Gunray also refers to the Sith Lord Darth Maul as having a role, with Gunray instructing the player on how to use him to take over enemy buildings.[1]
