"My name, for the record, is Coburn Sear of Quarzite. I am a colonel of the Confederacy of Independent Systems…and I do not seek the mercy of tyrants. Rather, I seek…to take those tyrants with me."
―Colonel Coburn Sear, to Caleb Dume[17]

Colonel (Col.) was a military rank that was common to most militaries throughout the galaxy. It was generally below the rank of general and above the ranks of major and commander. The rank itself was relatively high in the greater chain of command.

During the Clone Wars, both the Confederacy of Independent Systems[2] and the Galactic Republic utilized the rank of colonel.[1] An example of each included the Confederacy's Colonel Coburn Sear, who led Separatist Droid Army forces during the Third Battle of Mygeeto.[2] The Republic Colonel Meebur Gascon served as a strategist within Republic High Command. During the war, he commanded the droid unit D-Squad on a mission to steal a Separatist encryption module.[1]

The Republic's successor government, the Galactic Empire, utilized the officer rank in various capacities during the Imperial Era. It was used by both the Imperial Army,[21] the Imperial Starfighter Corps,[16] and the Imperial Security Bureau.[3]
