Rival Rush is a game mode that appears in Sonic Colors: Ultimate, an enhanced port of the original Sonic Colors. In this mode, Sonic can race Metal Sonic through various levels of the game. It is unlocked by collecting Red Star Rings scattered across different stages.
To unlock Rival Rush, the player must collect fifteen of the thirty Red Star Rings found within each world. Once the player has found fifteen Red Star Rings in a world, a pop-up will appear, telling the player that Rival Rush is now available. Go to the stage map, and the player should now see Metal Sonic's head marking the stage that can be played in Rival Rush mode.
There are a total of six Rival Rush stages to unlock, with one unlocked per Area, minus Terminal Velocity, where the objective is to outrun Metal Sonic while completing the level. Winning these races rewards the player with in-game bonuses such as Park Tokens and access to certain items in the Options Satellite.
If the player is using Super Sonic in Rival Rush, the Wisps will be disabled.
The concept of racing Metal Sonic to the finish line is similar to the SonicRivals games, where the player also have to race their opponent to the end of the level.
In initial screenshots for Rival Mode, the icon used for Metal Sonic was a fan render by Fetonxd on DeviantArt. This was later replaced in the final game.[1]
Fetonxd is aware of this and humorously said he hopes they don’t change it.[2]
