The Beats are Badniks that closely resemble egg-shaped crabs,[3] with pink metallic shells and gray underbellies. They have a pair of sharp needles on their bodies and crawl around with black and yellow-striped engine attachments on each side of them to act as their feet.
In gameplay, Beats are found in giant open rooms with dozens of them waiting for the player to appear. When the player enters such rooms, all local Beats will slowly crawl towards Sonic. Once they get close enough to him, they self-destruct, damaging Sonic if he is within range. However, the player can defeat them without causing them to explode by using a Spin Attack-related move. Despite this, other Beats will replace
the previously defeated Beats to attack the player, although eventually, these Badniks will stop spawning after enough are defeated. Additionally, Beats cannot exit the rooms in which they reside.
Unlike most other Badniks, Beats do not release Animals upon their destruction.

Powers and features[]
The Beats have the ability to manually detonate themselves, creating a wide explosion range, which can be especially deadly due to them usually coming in large groups to overwhelm their targets.
Weaknesses[]
Despite the Beats being found in large groups, they crawl very slowly and are not all that intelligent compared to other Badniks,[5] making them very easy to both outsmart and outrun. In addition, if the Beats are attacked, their explosions will be harmless to nearby enemies.

IDW Publishing[]
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing, Beats surrounded Sonic, Tails and Belle after a failed break-in into the Eggnet in an abandoned Eggman base near Windmill Village. With the Beats cornering the heroes in a confined space that prevented Sonic from speeding up, Sonic had to prepare a Spin Dash to break down the door and pave a way out.[5] That did not become necessary though, as Tails lured a Beat to detonate in front of the room's exit door and bring said door down, thus allowing the trio to escape the base.[6]
