Creative Confetti: Rule of Thirds

Hello, Creative Confetti fans! I have a challenge for you this week and I sure hope that you join me! I got this idea from a friend. Let's call it the rule of thirds. Have you heard of that rule in the art and photography world? The general thought is that to create an interesting composition, the image should be broken into thirds (horizontally and vertically) and if you place your key element along any one of the lines or at the junction of them, your piece will have more interest and be more dynamic. So, today, I'm going to do a little twist on the concept.

HOW TO PLAY: Create a card front and then divide it into thirds. Are you bold enough to divide up that beautiful creation that you colored? I was! You can do it too!

On to my Creation!

We are very lucky to winter in the warmer climate of Florida and we just got back to Wisconsin recently. Here, spring is just thinking about blossoming and I see some tulips, but not a lot.  That's why I decided to use the digital stamp from Power Poppy called Tulips. I printed it out on X-Press It blending card and colored it up with Copic markers. The background was created using Distressed Ink in Peeled Paint and applied with a brush. Then I took the step to actually cut my image into thirds and mount it to my base card.  I heat embossed the sentiment from the Power Poppy stamp set called So Grateful using platinum embossing powder.

Supplies: Tulips V01, V04, V06, V09 and some white gel pen. For the leaves YG03, YG63 and YG67.

The hardest part for me is to add the splatters. These are Novo drops applied with just the tip of the bottle. Thay way I have more control.

Okay friends, now, it's your turn! I hope you have the courage to create and then divide up your creations! I will be waiting to see how you get out of your comfort zone. Remember, after you create, link to your creation using the linky below. Every entry is one more chance to win $25 to spend in the Power Poppy Shop!

Until I see you again, please stay safe and well and..... create something!

Creative Confetti: Time to Sketch it Out!

Hello all and Happy Tuesday! Hope your week is off to a great start! Because we all love a good sketch every now and then, I thought I'd dig through to find one of my favorite cards recently and make it the center of a brand new sketch for Creative Confetti! So, are you ready sweet peeps?

HOW TO PLAY: It's as easy as using the sketch below! Use it as your inspiration and share your creation using the linky below! Here's the fun part -- you can flip the sketch any which way. Use it upside down, on its side, the world is your oyster! You can also use any shape -- no need to stick with an oval! Simply use the sketch as a launching point! If you want to stick to the basic sketch, that's perfect too. That's why I love sketches, it takes the guesswork out of creating!

On to my creation!

I should mention, this was a card I made last fall for World Cardmaking Day. While I created it a few months back, I loved this layout and through it would make a great sketch challenge.

For my card, I downloaded one of Power Poppy's digital images called Dazzling Display! Some of these images were well-loved in the Power Poppy clear set called So Grateful. I absolutely adore these illustrations! I decided to blow up the dahlia image, change the color to burnt orange and then print on a piece of orange dotted decorative paper to create my own bit of coordinating decorative paper. Then, I pulled the corner image into Photoshop Elements and used two of them to form an oval shape that I later die cut using a stitched oval die. I colored it all up with Copic markers, accenting with a bit of white gel pen!

I should mention that the sentiment was stamped using Nautical Navy Memento ink and adorned with two little enamel dots. Because I wanted a linear sentiment, I stamped this one from the Olive and Oak Expanded clear set.

And that, my friends, is it! An easy peasy sketch that you can flip, twist, turn and make using whatever shape you like! So, now it's your turn! Let's see you "Sketch it Out!" Don't forget to link up your creation below so we can ALL see what you've whipped up and you'll be entered into our monthly drawing for a $25 gift code to the Power Poppy Shop

Until next time!

Creative Confetti: Sketch It Out!

Hello all!
Since today is the last Tuesday for this month's challenge, I thought I'd try to start a bit of a trend -- let's see if I remember to keep it going! ;-) I thought I'd make this week's challenge all about the sketch! If you didn't know it, I love, love, love sketches! So, why not make it a regular feature here on Creative Confetti?

HOW TO PLAY:
Use the sketch below to create. Just that simple! Here's the fun part -- you can flip the sketch any which way. Use it upside down, on its side, the world is your oyster! If you like, you can also change the shape up a bit -- just don't change it so much that we can't really tell that you used the sketch for inspiration! ;-)

And, here's a peek at my creation! I do have a confession to make. This creation is one that I previously posted on my blog. Yes, my silly little craft room move is STILL ongoing. You'll have to stay tuned to my blog in the coming weeks for a reveal. ALSO... I would absolutely love it if, in the comments section here, you could share some of your favorite organizational tips. I am going to be organizing things out of boxes here shortly and am somewhat lost.

On to my creation!

Like I said, this one was created by me a while back but is still one of my favorites. I love the angles, the colors and, of course, the image, which is from Power Poppy's So Grateful stamp set. The little sentiment on the flag is from the In Praise of Sunflowers stamp set.

After stamping, I colored everything up with Copic markers. I started with the bluish purple flowers and grabbed B60, B63 and I blended with V01 and V0000. The centers were done with Y15, Y35, and YR09. The berries were colored with R24 and R39. The dahlias were a bit more intense when it comes to color. I moved from YR00, YR04, YR07, R14 and then I blended some of the flower with Y02 and Y11. The leaves were colored with G21, G24, YG00 and G20 and accented a bit with a wee bit of rust. I honestly don't remember what shade I grabbed, however. I added some shading with YR0000 and YR00. I also accented a bit with the help of a white gel pen.

Here's a close up....

And that, my friends, is it! Now it's your turn to take this sketch and make it your own! Can't wait to see what you come up with! Don't forget to link up your creation below once you do create because... as we always say... each and every link up is one more chance to win a $25 gift code to the Power Poppy Shop! Who wouldn't want to win that?

Happy Creating!

Creative Confetti: Merci Bouquet!

Hello my happy stampers! Okay, show of hands. Who is ready for spring? (Yes, I am raising my hand!) And, who feels like they are stuck in "Sprinter" -- the season where it should be spring but it still is winter. (Yes, I am still raising my hand!) I am not sure where it is like where you live but this week in Montana, we've had below zero temps and snow, lots of it. Today the high was -1! Yay! It's a day where I really needed a little bit of flower power in my life! So, that's why for this week's Creative Confetti Challenge, I thought I'd throw this little bit of inspiration up. Bouquets! Yes! Beautiful, lush bouquets! Check it out sweet peeps!

HOW TO PLAY: Simply use a Power Poppy image that has a collection of different flowers. There are so many to choose from that it will be super fun this week to see which blossoms you choose! Just in case you need a little bit of inspiration, click HERE to see just some of the wonderful offerings from Power Poppy that could help you show off a bouquet of blossoms! I honestly started to link up all the sets and then after 20 I decided listing them ALL would create quite the list! ;-) The good news is, there are so many options in both clear and digital stamp sets that you should be able to find something -- even in an instant! ;-)

To serve as a wee bit of inspiration, I decided to pull some creations that would fit the blossom-filled bill for this challenge!

Don't have a bouquet set? Why not create one yourself with some fussy or die cutting and a floral set like Power Poppy's Abundant Petals?

Artistic Bouquet is the epitome of a lush, beautiful bouquet. This card above might be one of my favorites of all time. I took Amy Shulke's online class on coloring up this beauty and am still amazed at how her tips really helped me create something with so much depth -- more so than I have created on my own in the past. Thanks Amy!

Sunset Sway is one of those easy breezy bouquets that doesn't take a ton of time to color up! And, who doesn't love that little fluttering butterfly?

And last, but not least, this one above is more of a spray of flowers but it still fits the bill! I adore this image from Power Poppy's So Grateful set because of the range of colors you can use to bring it to life!

So, there you have it my friends! A bounty of bouquet options and my samples really only scratched the surface of possibilities! So pick your petals, get those fingers inky and link up your creation below! Every single entry is one entry into our monthly random drawing for a $25 gift code to the Power Poppy Shop! YIPPPEEEEE!

Thanks for stopping by! We can't wait to see what YOU create!

Creative Confetti: Just Around the Corner!

Hello Power Poppy fans! It's that time again -- time to throw up that Creative Confetti to see how those colorful pieces fall and inspire you all! This week's challenge is super easy. It's not a stumper! Hehehe! So, get ready to go searching for your favorite image for a little trip....

HOW TO PLAY: That's right! You have two choices here -- stamp your image off the corner or, make the corner an accent and use a corner rounder!

I decided to do double duty with this challenge and use both examples in my creation!

I have been eyeing the image from the Power Poppy set So Grateful and really thought for this challenge, it would be perfect. So, after die cutting my main panel, I stamped the image off the top left and bottom right corners using Memento Espresso Truffle Ink. From there, I decided to keep things simple and instead of reaching for my Copics, like I do 99% of the time, I decided to go for a waterbased marker. I did some palette coloring, scribbling the color on a large acrylic block and then picking up and muting the color with a water brush. The fun thing is, you can use a lot of water to create a faint tone and then dry the brush off, pick up color and add shading and deeper tones by just slightly watering down the marker. Here's a peek at the color range I used. And I should point out, these are el cheapo markers that I picked up from Hobby Lobby. They are kind of a knockoff of the Staedtler twin tips but I like them just fine and the set has a great color range as well.

And here's a close up of my image and sentiment. You can see that I did create a yellow watercolor wash around my flowers just to add a little more pizazz!

And that, my friends, is it! Are you ready to go 'Just Around the Corner?' and join me this week? I sure hope so because 1. I love seeing what you come up with and 2. you could win a $25 gift code to the Power Poppy Shop if you are the random winner drawn at the end of the month! Keep in mind, we run the same linky all month long so play along with me just one week or each week to expand your chances of winning! Soooo... as I love to say... go get those fingers inky! ;-)

Happy Stamping!

5 Fun Techniques for Embossing Paste

Hello Friends!  One of the products I’ve discovered in the past year is embossing paste.  I’m no mixed-media girl by any stretch of the imagination, but I have found that this simple product mixed with a stencil can really add that touch of texture and interest that significantly steps-up your card creation.  I’ve been getting more questions about how I use it, so today I thought I’d bring you 5 fun ways you can use embossing paste in your Power Poppy projects.

What you’ll need to start with is a pot of embossing paste.  There are a ton of varieties of embossing paste, ones with colour, shimmer, or glimmer or crackle...you can experiment with whatever you like, but because I like to add other effects to the embossing paste, I like the plain white variety.  Then you’ll need some type of palette knife (I’m just using a basic kids smooth silverware knife with no teeth), and some type of tool to scrape your embossing paste over your stencil (I’m using an old credit card type of plastic).  You can get the nicer varieties of these tools, but I’m all about using what I have on hand.  Then you’ll need some stencils of your choosing.  There are a ton of varieties of stencils from many companies that work well.

Basic Embossing Paste

To do a basic stencilling technique with embossing paste I started a piece of scrap paper, my red card stock, and then this Tim Holtz Arrows stencil tacked onto the cardstock with tape.  You want your stencil to hold in place on your card stock, and not move around.

Next, using your knife, pick up some embossing paste from your jar and “spackle” it onto your stencil covering all the areas you want to emboss.  If you’ve ever taped and mudded drywall it has the same feel to it, just a lighter product :).  You want to make sure it gets into the areas in the stencil, but you don’t have to press it down yet.

Next take your “credit card” and scrape over the stencil to push all the embossing paste in the areas you want, and to even out the texture.  You can still add more embossing paste or go over areas more than once to get the coverage you like.  What’s great about embossing paste is that you can get a really even clean style of embossing if you apply nice even pressure, or even a more loose edgy look depending on how you use the scraper.  It’s all about the look you want to achieve.  I wanted a more loose, imperfect look to this one.

Then, lift off the stencil from your card stock.  You’ll want to take your stencil to the sink and scrub it off, or use a good wet rag to clean off all your tools promptly.  The embossing paste dries quickly when it’s thin, and you don’t want to have that dry on your tools or stencils.  Trust me :)

Here’s what the embossing paste looks like on the card stock.  You can see it’s a more loose, edgy look, which I think works for the arrows.

I leave my embossing paste to dry for at least an hour or two to make sure it’s well hardened before I finish up my cards.

And here’s the finished card with our Good Thinking: Love Notes stamp set.  I thought the arrows were a perfect match to the sentiment and it becomes a sweet CAS design for my beloved.  On the bottom of the design I added a couple of wood veneer pieces to match as accents.

Here are a few other cards I created with embossing paste used in this simple style.  Dancing with Daffodils, Amazing Azaleas, Happy Crabapples, Hello and Life is a Journey.   As you can tell, I really like this style!

Shimmery Embossing Paste

For another way of using the embossing paste with a touch of pizzazz, you can also add glitter to the damp embossing paste.  It is a subtle but lovely effect.

For this design, I took a Falling Heart stencil from Simon Says that I had used embossing paste in, and while my kraft cardstock was still in the stencil and the embossing paste was still damp, I sprinkled glitter all over the stencil gently pressing it into the hearts.  You could also take off the stencil and add the glitter while it’s wet  as well.    When paired with this beautiful scene from O Holy Night on this tag, it gives it the effect of glittery snow falling.

Of course when you want the glittery to shine....it doesn’t cooperate, but trust me that this little tag shimmers and shines beautifully.  Paired with the prismacolouring of the snow in the scene, it’s a lovely effect.

Metallic Embossing Paste

I’ve recently discovered that you can add metallic effects to your embossing paste that look so cool!  Here’s how you do it.

Add embossing paste as you normally would onto a stencil.  Here I’ve used a light gray cardstock and a honeycomb stencil.  Scrape off the excess and lift off your stencil (make sure you go clean your tools and stencil!).

Again, I’ve used a “rough” style for my scraping to give it a more edgy look.

Next, pour metallic emossing powder over your embossing paste.  Cover all the areas well.

Tap off the excess embossing powder, and now ...the most important step SET IT ASIDE TO DRY for about an hour or more.  This allows the embossing paste to set so you won’t get bubbling in your finished design.

After your paste is dry, heat set it with a heat tool, just like you would regular heat embossing.  You’ll have this gorgeous raised metallic image.  You can see by the bottom right corner in the embossing paste that I was not patient enough to let it dry longer and the embossing paste bubbled a bit....but hey - that’s an opportunity for embellishment right?

Here’s the finished design with our awesome Best Day Ever set.  I totally love that camera, and the silver embossing is such a nice pairing with the design.

Here’s a closeup.  Doesn’t the metallic embossing paste look cool?

Here’s another example of where I’ve used the metallic embossing paste in copper on this card  Olive and Oak.

Adding Colour into Embossing Paste

You can also add colour to your embossing paste in a variety of ways, re-inkers, ink pads, acrylic paint...the possibilities are endless.  I’ll show you how I did it with ink pads.

On a craft mat or heavy piece of plastic, take your ink pad and press it down onto the plastic surface.  Grab a bit of embossing paste from your jar and mix it into the paste till you get the colour you like.  I wanted a bit of an ombre look, so I did this three times with teal, turquoise and green ink pads.

Next add it to your stencil.  Because I wanted to have that ombre look, I added it in rows to this bubble stencil.  Scrape off your layers and let it dry.

Here are the finished ombre bubbles paired with the lovely Big Scripts set.  Doesn’t that look fun?

I love the sense of texture embossing paste gives!

Sponging Colour onto Embossing Paste

Another fantastic way to add colour to your embossing paste is to sponge it on.  It’s extremely effective in giving all over colour and perfectly matching to your design.

Use the embossing paste as shown in the first step and allow to completely dry.  For this technique I’d give it at least a couple of hours of drying time.  Just enough time to colour up your image.  Here I’ve used Power Poppy’s So Grateful set, and one of my favourite stencils, Gothic from Tim Holtz.

I pulled out some pumpkin pie ink, razzleberry ink and a sponge, and using round motions scrubbed the ink into the paper and the embossing paste.

When the colour is sponged in, it takes on almost a patina look. The more you sponge, the deeper the colour you’ll achieve.

And here is the finished design.  These colours really seem to give it a glow.

A gorgeous autumn sunset for this design!

Here is another sample of this technique where I used sponging and glimmer spritz:  Soothing Lavender.

So now you have all sorts of ideas for using this fun product!  I hope you’ll try them out, it adds a whole new dimension to your card making!

Thanks so much for joining me today!
