Whispy Woods (ウイスピーウッズ, Uisupī Uzzu) is a recurring boss in the Kirby series. He is a large apple tree with three holes forming a face and a pointed, branch-like nose. Whispy likens himself "king of the forest", though in actuality, he is quite the blowhard and a bit of a crybaby. Alongside Kracko, he is one of the most recurring bosses in the series often appearing as the boss of the first level or world.
He attacks by dropping large apples on Kirby, spitting puffs of air, and stabbing his roots up at Kirby. If Kirby doesn't have a copy ability, he must inhale the falling apples and spit them back at Whispy.
Appearances[]
Kirby series[]
Whispy Woods hasn't made many appearances outside of the Kirby series, but within this juggernaut of a franchise he has appeared in 12 video games and even the anime. He's one of the most popular bosses in the series, albeit one of the easiest as well. Unfortunately, there is no copy ability that can be acquired from Whispy Woods, presumably because of its large size. Most of the time, Whispy is the first, or one of the first bosses fought. King Golem from Kirby & the Amazing Mirror is the Mirror World counterpart of Whispy Woods.
Kirby's Dream Land[]
Whispy Woods makes his first appearance in Kirby's Dream Land. He is the boss of Green Greens and one of King Dedede's friends who received a stolen Sparkling Star. Whispy Woods returns in the final level Mt. Dedede as part of a boss rush alongside all of the game's previous bosses. In the Extra Game, Whispy Woods is much faster and now drops Gordos along with his apples. These Gordos can take off half of Kirby's health in a single hit.
Kirby's Avalanche[]
Whispy Woods, known as the abbreviation WHIS (WIS in the leaderboard), is the fifth opponent (Stage 2) and the second opponent in the Normal mode, after Poppy Bros. Sr. and before Kabu. Whispy Woods always opens the battle by attempting to build four rows of blobs at the bottom, and he will refill the bottom four rows if blobs from there are ever removed. His Puyo Puyo equivalent is Suketoudara.[1]
Super Smash Bros.[]
Whispy Woods has appeared in every game in the Super Smash Bros. series, as a background character on the Dream Land and Green Greens stages. He interferes with the fighters by blowing them around with his mighty breath and in Green Greens dropping apples that fighters can use as throwing weapons. In Melee the player could collect a trophy of him.
The following is Whispy Woods' trophy description:
- A boss enemy from Kirby's Dream Land. Whispy Woods is a big tree that shoots whirlwinds at Kirby. It isn't the toughest enemy: all Kirby has to do is avoid the occasional whirlwind, suck in apples that fall down, and then shoot them back at the tree. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Whispy Woods is quite the blowhard.
Variations[]
Whispy Woods is such an iconic part of the Kirby series that some games where he doesn't appear have included bosses heavily based on him. Kirby & the Amazing Mirror, for example, takes place in the Mirror World and has King Golem, a sentient stone tower that drops rocks on Kirby. On top of his default appearance, some games have included variations on the concept. In Kirby: Planet Robobot, he has been mechanized into Clanky Woods. He now has Drill Legs and can chase Kirby now instead of being stuck in ground.
There are also similar bosses in some games like in Flowery Woods from Kirby: Triple Deluxe and the late game boss, Yggy Woods from Kirby Star Allies. The extended family of Whispy Woods is fought regularly in Kirby Mass Attack.
Anime[]
Whispy Woods appears as a recurring character in the Kirby anime Kirby: Right Back at Ya! Here, he is the guardian of Whispy Woods Forest. Most of his episodes involve King Dedede trying to cut him down in order to build a golf course.
