The Evil Eye (イビルアイ, Ibiruai?, イーブルアイ, Īburuai?, or イーヴルアイズ, Īviruaizu?, lit. Evil Eye(s)), also known as the EYE, is a recurring creature in the Final Fantasy series, first appearing in the original Final Fantasy. While its appearance has varied, it is most frequently depicted as a variant of the Ahriman.

Appearances[]

Final Fantasy[]

Evil Eye from FFI Pixel Remaster sprite

The Evil Eye, also known as the EYE, appears as a mini-boss encountered in the Cavern of Ice, and later as a random encounter at Flying Fortress. It is a relatively dangerous foe as it has access to powerful abilities, such as Death, Break, and Kill, in addition to inflicting various status effects with Gaze, Slow, Silence, Sleep, and Hold. However, it lacks HP and therefore can be defeated relatively quickly.

In the original Japanese version, the Evil Eye greatly resembled a Beholder from Dungeons & Dragons, and was even called the Beholder (ビホルダー, Bihorudā?). Outside of Japan, and for all ports, the design and name were drastically changed, likely due to copyright concerns. The original Beholder design would not resurface until Dissidia Final Fantasy, where it is used as a player icon.

Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII-[]

It has access to Thundaga and Eerie Sound Wave, but is exceptionally dangerous for its usage of Stop Gaze to inflict Stop. It is possible to interrupt it during its attacks, making it easier to deal with.

Final Fantasy X[]

It has high Evasion and Magic Defense, making it harder to hit and kill with characters other than Wakka (or Rikku using items), but has relatively low HP. It is weak to Fire-elemental attacks. It fights using a physical attack as well as Stare to inflict Confuse.
