Concept artwork for Dirge of Cerberus -Final Fantasy VII-.
The Epiolnis (エピオルニス, Epiorunisu?, lit. Aepyornis), also known as the Aepyornis, Epiornis, Beakor, or Birdbeast, is a recurring creature in the Final Fantasy series, debuting in Final Fantasy VI. It is typically a bird-like creature with forearms in place of wings.
Appearances[]
Final Fantasy VI[]
The Aepyornis, also known as the Beakor, appears as an enemy encountered in the northeast of the World of Balance, around Gau's father's house, the Imperial Camp, and Doma Castle. It can Poison party members, but is a fairly weak enemy overall.
Final Fantasy VII[]

The Epiolnis appears as an enemy encountered in the Ancient Forest. Its attacks and HP are very weak for the point in the game it is fought at, and it can be killed easily. It drops rare Wizard Bracelet, and is the only source of them once Mideel is destroyed.
Dirge of Cerberus -Final Fantasy VII-[]
![Epiolnis-DoC](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/finalfantasy/images/d/d1/Epiolnis-DoC.gif/revision/latest?cb=20100525012120)
The Epiolnis appears as an enemy encountered during chapter 6. Though its short range attacks are very powerful, it has no long range moves, so fighting it at a distance is recommended. Its weak point is in its head.
Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII-[]

The Epiornis appears as an enemy encountered during "Escape from Hojo's Lab." It attacks with strong kicks and bites but has no abilities of its own. It is best to keep away from it and attack with magic, or to attack it from behind.
Final Fantasy XV[]
While the Birdbeast itself (Aepyornis in the Japanese release) goes unseen, the Birdbeast Egg can be obtained as a cooking ingredient.

The Epiornis appears as a wind-elemental card. Notably, while the card is attributed to Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII-, it instead uses artwork from Dirge of Cerberus.
Etymology[]
Aepyornis is a genus of extinct, flightless bird more commonly known as an "elephant bird".
