[edit]From Middle High German verdriezen, from Old High German firthriozan, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *firi- + *þreutaną (“to harass”).
Akin to Middle Low German vordrêten (Danish fortryde), Middle Dutch verdrieten (Dutch verdrieten).
