Beware! This user's talk page is patrolled by talk page stalkers.

Welcome, again!

[edit]

Well, this was nice. Your IP had jumped once again, so I just saw a fourth IP on Gotland. All those IPs was really making my head spin, so I'm very grateful that you made an account. And please stay and make more edits! We do need good editors like you. Not many IPs make so good edits right of the bat. Well, you still have a lot to learn, but I've seen worse. Cheers, w.carter-Talk 19:07, 14 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the compliment and again for the welcome mat. As for the jumping IPs, my internet connection/ISP is not the most reliable, I'm afraid. A textbook example of how not to do a privatisation.

Do you want me to stack the userboxes on your userpage for you? Left or right side? Once you see the code you will be able to muck them about yourself. (It is bad manners to touch another userpage without asking first.) w.carter-Talk 19:42, 14 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
If you wouldn't mind, thanks! Ceannlann gorm (talk) 19:51, 14 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Right side, by the way! Ceannlann gorm (talk) 19:52, 14 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You revealed my secret identity. Aieeee!

OOOPS!!! Put back the arrows quickly before someone sees it. Sorry.... w.carter-Talk 20:15, 14 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ah well, it had to come out someday. Ceannlann gorm (talk) 20:20, 14 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Just curious: Since your IP was designated to Dublin, does your user name mean "A blue blade" in Gaelic? w.carter-Talk 20:31, 14 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

That's one of the possible meanings; another is 'blue armour' (Ceannlann was also a type of chain mail invented by the Celts). Ceannlann gorm (talk) 20:39, 14 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A cheeseburger for you!

Hello! When you make a link like [[repair shop]] most such links are flexible so you might not have to worry about the capital letter at the beginning. Such things are mostly restricted to names and the likes. You can write the link with a lower case and check in the preview if it works before making the [[Repair shop|repair shop]]. But, in this case there is another problem. The repair shop does not link to a specific page, it links to a page where different kinds of "repair shop" can be found. You should always click on the links you make to see where you eventually end up. Pages like this are called disambiguation pages and most of the times you will get a Bot message that you have accidentally linked to such a page, asking you to clarify the "final destination". I have done that at Gotland#Military and you can see how it's done. Cheers, w.carter-Talk 11:41, 15 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I wasn't sure whether the repair shop in this case was a backshop or a full blown tank repair depot, so I tried to square the circle. Ceannlann gorm (talk) 11:44, 15 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I pass the old house for the shop each day on my way to work (I also saw it in action back in the days), not what I would call a full tank repair depot. Every part had to be shipped from the mainland when needed. w.carter-Talk 11:55, 15 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I thought that might well be the case, however since the relevant reference implied that it was at least a two story building I decided to opt for the cautious approach. Ceannlann gorm (talk) 14:54, 15 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Small tip: A link to a disambiguation page is always wrong. If you are uncertain of what it is, don't link it at all. w.carter-Talk 16:27, 15 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Right you are. Ceannlann gorm (talk) 16:29, 15 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A pitcher of Gotlandsdricka for you!
For your hard work and to help you celebrate Saint Patrick's Day, here's a contribution from the "Celtic" part of Sweden. :D w.carter-Talk 10:25, 17 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

<sithmode> Dricku is the national beverage of Gotland. The rest of the world is (thankfully) spared. It symbolizes and embodies the rebellious nature of Gotlanders and the harsh island. The un-official and very secret recipe for dricku is this: Take one (1) fairly large juniper. Hack it into moderately large pieces and place in a jerrycan. Do not remove anything! Dirt cleanses your system and spiders and bugs add flavor and protein. Add water and whatever is left in your pantry. Ferment until strong. The alcohol content is always a mystery, do not measure it. Dricku is the only beverage which can be consumed by people who never drink alcohol (see aforementioned mystery). It is also exempt from all laws and regulations about the selling, drinking and handling beverages. Note: All of the above is only valid on Gotland. An annual Dricku-making World Championship is held on Gotland at some illustrious location with a population larger that 14.</sithmode> w.carter-Talk 10:26, 17 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited 1915 Vanceboro international bridge bombing, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Western Front. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Gotland as a hotspot

[edit]

Hi! As you may have noticed, my ordinary life keeps coming in the way of the WP right now. :( I saw you latest edits on Gotland. So a few pointers: There are currently a lot of rumors, actions, buzz, whatever, about Gotland and the military. The prudent WikiWay is to sit back wait until hearsay and political gambits solidify into facts. The Gotland article is a sort of general description of the island and everything on it. Due to your diligence it is now becoming a bit heavy in the military department. ;) No real harm in that, the facts are undoubtedly interesting and relevant, BUT it would be better to put most of it in the Military in Gotland article. Therefore it is even more vital to get that article in a sort of ready state and get it into the main. Gotland is not what you would call a "Current Events" article, whereas the "Military in Gotland", or some section of it is very much so.

So, I'll leave the edits in Gotland for now, but I would advice you to go with the facts that are now in the Draft and provide them with references and get a sort of "skeleton structure" going in it so that it can be moved to main rather soon. Once it is moved, you can still continue to add to it and improve it. There are already enough facts in it to go for a DYK, they just need to be ref'd. When that article gets going, we can move some of the things that are now in the Gotland article to the right place in your new article, and also trim down the Military section to a proportional size. I thought we were going to have time to do things more leisurely, but the current events about Gotland have speeded things up a bit. Cheers, w.carter-Talk 18:32, 23 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@w.carter Roger that. I'll see if I can flesh out and tidy up enough areas in the draft this evening to set the stage for a final push tomorrow. Ceannlann gorm (talk) 10:37, 24 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Just to underline this, it seems, we had some "visitors" this morning: Sweden intercepts Russian planes over Baltic amid regional tensions. Btw, the code for the 'ping'-thing is (look in the code) @W.carter: or W.carter or even @W.carter:. With the w.carter you don't need the "@". Best, w.carter-Talk 16:17, 24 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
My plans for yesterday evening got disrupted a bit. However, I've caught up somewhat this morning and hope to have the draft, refs and all, ready for final chiseling and carving sometime this evening. Ceannlann gorm (talk) 13:26, 25 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, I saw that. Disasters must naturally take precedence. I'm glad that you call it "chiseling and carving" most newbies refer to it as the "sledge hammer". There are always so many thing that a new editor has not got into his blood, and in good faith he does all kinds of mistakes, so please don't take it personally when I correct things. One thing I notice is that you may have misunderstood the thing about the lead. That is supposed to be a very short version of the article for the lazy reader to get all the general facts in a few sentences. An abstract of the article. Right now it is more like an introduction (a very nice one, but still...) to the article. I can help you with that once I've gone through the article, or you can have a go at it yourself. I think I will have some time for the WP tonight and tomorrow.
I must also commend you on how far you have got in a very short time. :) Hope you are starting to feel at home in the community and that you have not been ill treated so far. Cheers, w.carter-Talk 13:47, 25 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Not at all, it's been great so far! I have to head away for a while, see you later on. Ceannlann gorm (talk) 13:58, 25 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

See also

[edit]

Looks like your reversion has been reverted. In future, it's best if you actually try to explain why a See also has relevance rather than just revert their removal. The Rambling Man (talk) 19:37, 24 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the tip The Rambling Man. You saved me the trouble of removing them since they're now redundant so far as regards the 'See also' section, given that Air Inter Flight 148 is in both the 'Accidents and incidents involving the Airbus A320 family' & 'List of accidents and incidents involving airliners by location § France' articles now linked in the section, and Air France Flight 178 is linked in the main text of the article itself. Ceannlann gorm (talk) 10:18, 25 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ta-Dah!

[edit]
Yeah!

Your first article is LIVE!! I added the last refs, so the only thing left is a scrawny clarification. Very nice job indeed! Congrats. I did the usual housework for the Article & Co. So, now you have seven days to nominate it for DYK. I think you can do the honor yourself, otherwise just holler. Cheers, w.carter-Talk 22:21, 28 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It's lunchtime here and I am hungry - therefore many thanks for the cheeseburger :-) and it was a pleasure to do the chart, after I had scared half of Gortland senseless with this article [1]. Btw. A very small note

[edit]

Hello my young WikiWolfcub! Thank you for your addition to my museum draft. It is good that you practice by "chewing on my slippers" so you will not get into trouble with other editors. :) But this raised something you should know. If you are not working on a draft together with another editor, like we did on Military on Gotland, it is considered bad manners to edit a draft unless asked to by the editor(s) initiating it. This is to give the creator of the article a chance to finish the draft in peace and quiet before the article is thrown to the wolves in the main area. Suggestions can be left at the draft's talk page, though. As we have noticed, we had at least one editor chomping at the bit to add to the article (with a very good edit), but they waited until the article was in the main in accordance with good Wiki-etiquette. However, if drafts are left unattended for too long they end up at Wikipedia:WikiProject Abandoned Drafts where anyone can have a go at them. All the best, w.carter-Talk 17:20, 30 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Got it, sorry for the goof! Ceannlann gorm (talk) 17:38, 30 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. How can you learn if you don't try? Cheers, w.carter-Talk 17:46, 30 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

April Fools edits

Please keep April Fools content out of the mainspace. Please see Wikipedia:Rules for Fools for more information. Thanks, Nakon 23:15, 31 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Follow me to join the secret cabal!

Plip!

You have been minnowed for not reading the instructions before opening the can of worms. w.carter-Talk 23:37, 31 March 2015 (UTC)[April Fools!][reply]

Good morning Nakon. I think you may be misinterpreting WP:Fools here. While three of the items concerned could conceivably fall into a grey area despite they're being properly formatted and tagged, the rest were unambiguously 'legal' under that policy, especially when you take the relevant formula into account. Ceannlann gorm (talk) 09:13, 1 April 2015 (UTC) [April Fools!][reply]

Pssst, if you don't link/mention the editor AND sign during the same edit, the 'ping' will not be made and they will not be notified. - This message will not be destroyed in ten seconds, you have to vaporize it yourself. w.carter-Talk 09:11, 1 April 2015 (UTC) (the ever meddeling one)[reply]

This is your only warning: the next time you disrupt mainspace with one of your "jokes" I'll block you. Salvio Let's talk about it! 10:03, 1 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Furthermore - do not edit war to keep "jokes" in, mainspace or not. WormTT(talk) 10:05, 1 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, My Young Apprentice, you have managed to invoke the actions of no less than three admins. The jokes are not worth that much aggravation. A friendly advice: Just walk away, and find some other way to celebrate this day. Best, w.carter-Talk 10:15, 1 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I think I'll take that advice and lay low for a few days. Some people would seem to have a poor appreciation for both the letter and spirit of Wikipedia:FOOLS. Ceannlann gorm (talk) 10:28, 1 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Wherein it states in bold - "All jokes and pranks must be kept out of the article namespace." - NQ (talk) 10:31, 1 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Remember ...
(edit conflict) Sounds like a good plan. People here do have some sense of humor, but the jokes have to be very, very subtle and not disturb the day to day business of the WP. My own most viewed joke was actually not made on 1 April and it was sort of in the main space, but it had a connection to my edits, so I got away with it. :) It was when I translated the Stockholm Palace from an FA on the SweWiki and I was bored out of my skull with having to come up with yet another edit summery for the translation. So I wrote this summery + the next. Those edits really spiked the Page views statistics. I'll take my pleasures wherever I can find them, however small. Cheers, w.carter-Talk 10:46, 1 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Happy Easter!

[edit]

Whishing you a very pleasant holiday.

About editing here ... I often look at that as a sort of high stakes poker game: You don't "play" the articles or even the rules and recommendations, you play the editor (or community) opposite you. And as the old song says, the trick to survive and stay in the game here is to "know when to hold 'em ... when to walk away" and just count your money edits when the dyk is done. A trick I think you are getting the hang of... Cheers, w.carter-Talk 21:16, 3 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Happy Easter! Yes, a hasty 'advance to rearwards' seemed to be in order! Ceannlann gorm (talk) 17:22, 4 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Nice of you to come up with more info to help that article into the main. :) If a user ask at the Teahouse to have an article moved to main, that means they consider the article ready. But since this user did not have the same benefit as you have of having a mentor, they have to ask for it to be reviewed. If the article looks good (and this one certainly did) you can leave a note at the users talk page and do what you can to help the article make it to main, even if it is in the sandbox or a draft. That is considered a good deed. There are some users/wikignomes at the Teahouse who almost specializes in helping articles along this way. ;) I have seen articles go from crap to admissible in hours this way. I just do the most obvious cases. (Lazy me...) w.carter-Talk 20:07, 6 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Bit of clarification

[edit]

I really like to see how you have settled in here since you made the account. :) Adding to and fixing up stubs and rescuing articles from deletion are very noble tasks. Good job! Also I think I owe you a small clarification about why I dabble in military articles even though I no expert in that area. (Sorry for my previous curt answer.) My knowledge of military things, as well as some lingo, have rubbed of from friends, most of whom are in the military, Swedish and foreign. I've been to many camps and bases in several countries. I've seen friends off to wars, not all of them came back, and I use the same shooting ranges they do. So, I'm "adapted" to military stuff and can put in my two cents now and then in such articles, but it's grunt-knowledge and not up to par with your expertise. ;) Cheers, w.carter-Talk 19:57, 9 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I think you're far too modest, but thanks. Ceannlann gorm (talk) 20:18, 9 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

So when I was working on my museum draft, I found some pics in a book with old newspaper clippings that I uploaded in case you want to add some.

Cheers, w.carter-Talk 22:42, 10 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I was going to use the Bataljonschefer image in the article, but couldn't quite fit it in to my satisfaction. I did put it in the Gotland National Conscription article though. See you around tomorrow, or should I say today. Ceannlann gorm (talk) 23:12, 10 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No problemo. I find 'em, you use 'em. I placed the Korsbetningen in the Battle of Visby article. w.carter-Talk 23:18, 10 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hangouts

[edit]

Thanks for trailing my edits and helping me clean up other articles. :) Still can't believe how you manage to find all those categories! When I don't feel like doing serious research I sometimes hang out at the Teahouse to see if any newbies have some articles in trouble, and I go in and do a bit of wikignome work. It's rather relaxing after major articles and policy battles. Another place to find easy stuff to do is at Category:All dead-end pages. Anything you do for those articles is an improvement. On occasion, even finding refs can be really easy, not too taxing and result in an ok article for the WP and some new knowledge for me, like when I fixed Francis Wallace (writer). w.carter-Talk 13:24, 30 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Just saw that you were battling with a Bot at Miyako-jima. I've suggested a solution. Revert if you don't like it. w.carter-Talk 12:45, 2 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'd already changed out the problem code, but your code will do just as well thanks. Ceannlann gorm (talk) 12:47, 2 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

No, thanks for the heads up. Hmmmm. I get the impression from the article that the Supreme Commander is on shaky political ground indeed, perhaps even going so far as being the designated scapegoat in waiting for the current mess that Sweden's defences are in. Ceannlann gorm (talk) 15:57, 3 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

There was recently a deletion debate which you took part. The debate continues on the talk page of the article (see talk:Melee). Please join the debate so that a consensus can be reached on the initial issues of whether it is appropriate to include the maintenance {{coatrack}} at the top of the article Melee. --PBS-AWB (talk) 17:08, 6 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I've fixed it up a bit more so it is not a stub anymore. Which means that you can DYK it if you want to. If you do it, you don't need a qpq for it. That kicks in after the fifth nomination. w.carter-Talk 16:20, 28 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

More things to learn

[edit]

Hi! Thanks for helping me with the cleanup on Sarek National Park. :) However, there were a couple of things that were not completely correct according to the manual, although they seem like good ideas.

  • The bold for Pårte Scientific Station in the lead should not be there. There is a section of the WP:BOLDTITLE that mentions why: Only the first occurrence of the title and significant alternative titles (which should usually also redirect to the article) are placed in bold:. I've reworded the small explanation since it is called that in more than just sources.
  • There should not be any links to sections of the article in the lead. That is what the table of Contents is for. Otherwise every fact that is mentioned in the lead could be linked and that would make a mess! The lead is only a summary or an abstract of the article.
  • You can never refer to sections by their number. Articles are not static but changing all the time, and since the numbers are created automatically, they will change as soon as one section in the article is moved, added, merged or deleted. This will most likely result in the number pointing to the wrong section.

Please, do not be discouraged by this. Keep editing. If I see something that is not right, I will correct it and explain why. :) Later today (or tonight) I have to tackle the last section and see if I can get it right. Since the Samis' rights and the reintroduction of wolves are highly volatile topics in Sweden, this will be very tricky to get right and neutral. <sigh!> Well, no guts, no glory! New policy today. w.carter-Talk 10:50, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting. A desperation move to try and reverse dire opinion polls, without actually doing anything? Ceannlann gorm (talk) 11:04, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Probably. Or perhaps paving the way to show why we should join NATO. That old discussion has been renewed lately. w.carter-Talk 11:10, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm. I had overlooked that possibility. What is your opinion of the current Minister for Defence, Peter Hultqvist, if I may ask? Ceannlann gorm (talk) 11:19, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to say, I have been too busy with changes in my own little life these past months to follow the news much and form an opinion. That said I'm not too impressed by his CV, he seems to be anchored in what happened some twenty years ago and maybe not so much current events. w.carter-Talk 11:36, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
In other words current Swedish defence policy can still be summarised as follows:

Where do you FIND all these categories?? I never knew some of them even existed! w.carter-Talk 18:35, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Something new: Here is a small tip/treat for you. Since some of your expertise is fixing the cats, let me introduce you to a thing that will make this sooo much easier for you, HotCat. I use it myself. You simply check a box in your "Preferences" and hey presto you get small "-" and "+" etc. beside the categories at the bottom of the page. This way you don't need to open the editing window for adding/removing/substituting cats and will never have to worry about editing conflicts since everything is done (the subversive way ^^) down in the categories box. Even the editing summery is automatic, like in this diff where I used it. I think you'll like it, if not just uncheck the box again. Everything is described on the linked page above. Happy cat hunting! w.carter-Talk 13:38, 17 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

See what a Sunday stroll can lead to! Taking some pics and when searching for articles to put them in finding none for the mats. Quite astonishing that no article existed for such a widely covered subject. (no pun intended) I'm learning a lot in the process. Thanks for your help, I'll be getting lazy in looking for the cats. Better get back to work that pays for the rent. Boss is glaring. w.carter-Talk 10:08, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

November 2015 Paris attacks

[edit]

You can't claim an attack is Islamic unless you have a reliable source that says it's Islamic. Rklawton (talk) 23:36, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I fear we're going to look ridiculous by pretending that it is not Islamic terrorism. All the major news outlets are treating it as such. Ceannlann gorm (talk) 23:42, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't read a major news outlet yet that has declared "ISIS did it". We should just stick with the facts as best we can. I remember the Oklahoma City bombing where the common assumption was that foreign terrorists were responsible. Personally, I think you're right. But I also think that Wikipedia is right in waiting until we have a reliable source. Besides, I think it's really cool that journalists go to Wikipedia during these sorts of events when they want to separate out fact from rumor as we do our best not to include rumor in our articles. Rklawton (talk) 23:52, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough then. Though I only put in the Islamic terrorism related category, not specifically ISIS. Ceannlann gorm (talk) 23:53, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

ENGVAR

[edit]

Information icon In a recent edit, you changed one or more words or styles from one national variety of English to another. Because Wikipedia has readers from all over the world, our policy is to respect national varieties of English in Wikipedia articles.

For a subject exclusively related to the United Kingdom (for example, a famous British person), use British English. For something related to the United States in the same way, use American English. For something related to India, use Indian English. For something related to another English-speaking country, such as Canada, Australia, or New Zealand, use the variety of English used there. For an international topic, use the form of English that the original author used.

In view of that, please don't change articles from one version of English to another, even if you don't normally use the version in which the article is written. Respect other people's versions of English. They, in turn, should respect yours. Other general guidelines on how Wikipedia articles are written can be found in the Manual of Style. If you have any questions about this, you can ask me on my talk page or visit the help desk. Thank you. --John (talk) 11:44, 17 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, should have spotted that and changed the spelling when I added the wikilink. Thanks for letting me know! Ceannlann gorm (talk) 11:59, 17 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Interesting. I would hold off from adding this category to any more articles for now. Obviously if there is a wide consensus to add it that would be different. --John (talk) 13:32, 5 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I'll hold off then for the moment. Ceannlann gorm (talk) 12:02, 8 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

I've noticed you were adding this category to a bunch of articles today. I think many of those articles aren't actually about the Japan Self-Defense Forces, and that the category isn't appropriate to those articles. I don't think it is appropriate to place articles in that category when the story is about other organizations that happen to be defending Japan (such as the UN or fictional organizations). Please only use that category when the characters are supposed to be members of the Japan Self-Defense Forces, and not when they are members of other organizations. Calathan (talk) 20:52, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Calathan. Thanks, but the category not only covers fictional members of the JSDF, along with fictional JSDF equipment, but also fictional branches of the JSDF as well as fictional incarnations/successor organisations. It's also intended to cover article subjects that include cameos of the real world branches in various works of fiction. Ceannlann gorm (talk) 21:27, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)I've removed the category again from Neon Genesis Evangelion and Full Metal Panic!. Per WP:CATDEF, when categorizing articles, the categories should be defining aspects of the subject, meaning something that reliable sources would commonly and consistently mention about the subject. Anyone reading the article should be able to tell why the article is in the categories it is in. For Category:Japan Self-Defense Forces in fiction to be appropriate for an article, it is not enough that the JSDF appears in the work. Instead, the JSDF should be an integral part of the work, such that almost any source writing about the work would mention the JSDF. The category is appropriate for things like Yomigaeru Sora – Rescue Wings or Gate (novel series), where the main characters are members of the JSDF and any reliable source talking about the work would mention the JSDF. However, for things like Neon Genesis Evangelion and Full Metal Panic!, where the JSDF happens to appear but aren't a particularly important part of the work, placing them in those categories is inappropriate. Neither of those articles even mentions the JSDF anywhere, and most sources talking about them wouldn't mention the JSDF. Please only add the category when the JSDF is a major part of the work that is mentioned in most sources talking about the work. Calathan (talk) 21:32, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It shouldn't cover successor or similar organizations as with Mithril in FMP or NERV in Evangelion, but if a show features the JSDF and it has a secret mecha or vampire branch or a base in a fictional town, then that can be considered. Also, a minor character or a cameo appearance of a JSDF would not meet the CATDEF. A lot of the series that were categorized had concerned other fictional organizations that act kind of like the JSDF but aren't the JSDF. For example: TERRA in Rahxephon, NERV in Evangelion, Pan Pacific Defense Corps in Pacific Rim (film), A.D. Police in Bubblegum Crisis. In Vividred Operation, there's a National Defense Force but it is in a futuristic Japan where JSDF no longer exists, and a Vigilance Corps in Reideen but in an alternative fictional world. However, the creation of a fictional branch as with Information Self Defense Force (I-SDF) in the video game Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory is acceptable. In Arpeggio of Blue Steel the JSDF grows its function to cover more operations. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 22:30, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You added the "abandoned military projects" category to this article, saying "Due to recent developments which are likely to see even the truncated class decommissioned in the near future, have added Category:Abandoned military projects of the United States". But (a) there is nothing in the text of the article about this; (b) in particular, there is no WP:RS; (c) WP does not predict the future. So I'm removing this category for now. --Macrakis (talk) 20:20, 14 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Category:History of the tank

[edit]

Hello: what criteria are you using as to which tank articles to add this cat? Seems subjective. Kierzek (talk) 21:44, 13 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kierzek. I'm trying to add articles that have some direct insight into the development of the tank, or otherwise are related to a significant milestone in or contribution to tank development. I'm trying to get a broad coverage of tank development internationally, hopefully without overloading the category. Ceannlann gorm (talk) 21:51, 13 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That was my guess. Although I must say the Type 94 Disinfecting Vehicle and Type 94 Gas Scattering Vehicle is not sufficient; and it was not used in WWII and was just a variant of the Type 94 tankette. So, I hope you don't mind if I revert that addition, accordingly. Cheers, Kierzek (talk) 21:57, 13 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I thought I would add that as an example of a tank developed for use in chemical/biological warfare. Ceannlann gorm (talk) 21:59, 13 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well, okay then; I can see that to a degree. Kierzek (talk) 22:01, 13 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I've undone a number of your category adds as the articles were already in a subcategory of that category. Eg Crusader is under WWII tanks of the UK, which is under Tanks by country which is under History of the tank. See WP:Subcategory. GraemeLeggett (talk) 08:22, 14 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I see that obsessive and simplistic imposition of SUBCAT as (yet again) completely useless. It breaks the entire purpose of that category.
Of course there are members of this cat where I'd question their inclusion, but that's inevitable and quite subjective. Maybe a list article would work better, given the inevitable misuderstanding of MediaWiki categorisation and the damage that will be caused over and over by SUBCAT. Andy Dingley (talk) 09:29, 14 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Having spotted some of the edits over the last few days, I had some similar thoughts. A list article may well be better in providing the opportunity for context to the decision on inclusion, but this is so subjective that I suspect it would be open to a lot of backwards and forwards editing based on individual interpretations (and personal biases, my own included). I've started a discussion point on the category talk page and that may be a better place to have this discussion. Category talk:History of the tank Lkchild (talk) 12:45, 16 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

).

You added Mischief Reef to Category:Coastal fortifications. I reverted with the edit comment "Mischief Reef is not on the coast of anything". Rather than discuss the matter, you started an edit war by reinstating your edit with the comment "Category does cover naval fortifications in general". I do not wish to participate in an edit war, but I very strongly disagree that Mischief Reef should be in a category with the name "Coastal fortifications".

  • Please read WP:BRD.
  • Mischief Reef is an artificial island on top of a reef on top of an atoll which is surrounded by ocean 1,000+ meters deep, and is more than 100km from the coast of the Philippines.
  • It is not costal.
  • It is not a "fort".
  • It is not naval, or at least, it is not just naval.
  • It is unclear to me that it is a "fortification". (Maybe it is "fortified", depending on the definition of "fortified".)
  • Therefore it is neither coastal fortifications nor naval fortifications
  • And I fail to see why you say "Category does cover naval fortifications in general". The category is "Coastal fortifications". If the category "covers naval fortifications in general", then it should be renamed to something like "naval fortifications".

Thanks for the heads up! I'll head over and see what's up. Ceannlann gorm (talk) 17:40, 15 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, you needn't have removed the note and notes section. Ceannlann gorm (talk) 17:51, 15 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
This should clear things up. If we haven't heard back in a day or so, you can go ahead and restore the note and notes section. See you later! Ceannlann gorm (talk) 18:01, 15 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
