Propose deleting Category:IP talk pages for speedy deletion (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

Nominator's rationale: This is a category that should never be used as there is no speedy deletion criteria for IP talk pages. The most relevant discussions seems to be at Wikipedia talk:Criteria for speedy deletion/Archive 9#IP talk pages from March 2006 and Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2007 February 19#Category:IP talk pages for speedy deletion. The reason that it was kept back then seems to be that it was actually used as a list of pages that should possibly be blanked in the future. Oppose. There isn't a convention: many of these are at "Alumni of Foo" and "Faculty of Bar", and that would work much better here than messing about with the commas (i.e., Category:Alumni of the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, Category:Faculty of the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich). @BrownHairedGirl: Indeed, you are right. But this only means that at some point in the past, somebody decided to use US English instead of British English for that country. It could have been the other way round (it would have been more logical, even, to use British English, since both countries are almost neighbo[u]rs, and the current dynasty comes from Hanover...), but it somehow ended up like this. A decision had to be made, and a coin was tossed, et voilà. And now, some people are unhappy (me). But I'll get over it, if nothing changes. Comment - exactly this point was raised relatively recently with an alumni category. Here 2020_March_4#Category:Islamia_College_(Lahore)_alumni and 2019_October_24#Xxx_of_the_University_of_California,_Los_Angeles. The conclusion was to leave things as-is. Comment. Frankly, I think in instances like this it's being overly pedantic to insist on "Foo alumni" when "Alumni of Foo" would obviously bee much clearer, consistency or not. Personally, I think all these categories should be moved to "Alumni of Foo". It's not in any way an ENGVAR issue (surely nobody is claiming that American English doesn't use this construction?), and it's much better and clearer English. "Faculty"/"Academics" is an ENGVAR issue, but "Faculty of Foo" would still be much clearer and the word order, once again, isn't an ENGVAR issue. -- Necrothesp (talk) 10:41, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
