Etymology

edit

Uncertain. Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerǵʰ- (height). Cognate to Ancient Greek πύργος (púrgos, tower), German Berg (mountain). The final velar might have arisen from an earlier singularized plural *birgje (cf. breg ~ brigje), which was later devoiced, although this is speculation.
