Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is the official motion picture soundtrack for the film of the same name. The soundtrack for the film was composed by Geoff Zanelli, who also worked on music for The Odd Life of Timothy Green and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
Background[]
Zanelli was hired to score the film in May 2019, having previously worked with Rønning on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. He said that he was drawn to the film's storytelling and that writing the score was "a dream come true". He also said that the music for the sequel was darker and bigger than the first film's, as it dealt with a clash of cultures and a conflict between two mothers.
Zanelli did not follow Howard's score from the first film, but he discussed with Rønning on applying some of the thematic material from it. He said that he wanted to give Maleficent a different tonal approach, as she was allergic to iron, and avoided using metal sounds. He also used indigenous instruments from various parts of the world to create a sound for the Dark Fae, a new race of winged creatures introduced in the film. He said that he used 80 different drums to accompany their score, as they were "winged creatures who live on the wind".
The soundtrack also features a theme song by Bebe Rexha, titled "You Can't Stop The Girl", which was released as a single on September 20, 2019. Rexha said that she wrote the song as an empowerment anthem for women and girls and that she was inspired by Maleficent's character arc. She said that she wanted to convey the message that "no matter what anyone says or does to you, you can't stop yourself".
