This article is about the item and antagonist. For the game, see The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. For other uses, see Majora's Mask (Disambiguation).

Majora's Mask is a recurring Item, Object, and Boss in The Legend of Zelda series.[2][3] Majora's Mask goes unnamed in A Link Between Worlds.

Location and Uses[]

Majora's Mask[]

Majora's Mask serves as the main antagonist that Link must stop and defeat within the game of the same name, rather than Ganon. It is first introduced after the Happy Mask Salesman removes the curse that was placed on Link by Skull Kid. The Happy Mask Salesman explains that Majora's Mask is an ancient, powerful artifact that was used by an ancient tribe for its bewitching rituals, but Majora's Mask's wicked power became so great that it was sealed away to prevent a great catastrophe. However, since the ancient tribe vanished, no one accurately knows the true nature of its power. The Happy Mask Salesman fears the great devastation that could befall Termina if Majora's Mask is not quickly taken back from the Skull Kid within three days.[4]

When the Skull Kid donned Majora's Mask, it transformed a world into the land of Termina, out of a combination of the evil within the Mask and the Skull Kid's memories and delusions.[5]

For the vast majority of the game, the Majora's Mask is worn by Skull Kid on the top of the Clock Tower, drawing the Moon to Termina, eager to cause total destruction of the world.[6] Although the Skull Kid is unaware, Majora's Mask is gradually beginning to take complete control of his mind the moment he first wore it, with his once harmless pranks becoming malicious acts of pure evil, therefore using him as a puppet.[7] Prior to the game's events, Skull Kid used the great power of Majora's Mask to prank and curse others around him, such as Kafei.[8]

After the Guardian Deities are called, Majora's Mask abandons Skull Kid and enters the Moon via its mouth so that it can push it through the Guardian Deities' blockade and complete its destructive path.[9][10] Link then proceeds to follow Majora's Mask into the Moon.[11] Once inside, he finds four Moon Children wearing the Boss remains and one additional lonely child under a Tree wearing Majora's Mask itself. If Link gives all his non-transformation Masks to the four children (including the Giant's Mask), the child wearing Majora's Mask will give him the Fierce Deity's Mask as a reward. He will then take Link to a room where the final battle takes place against the Mask. It comes in three increasingly more powerful forms. Its final form, Majora's Wrath, is the actual entity behind Majora's Mask's evil powers, called Majora.

After the young Hero of Time, with the aid of Tatl, defeat Majora's Mask in a clashing battle, he returns to the land of Termina where the Happy Mask Salesman informs them that the evil inside the Mask has disappeared for good.[12] Majora's Mask is last seen as the Happy Mask Salesman departs with it in his hands, with itself now nothing more than an ordinary mask.

According to the Zelda Encyclopedia, although Link saved the day, as Termina was created by the combinations of the burdens of Skull Kid's heart and the evil powers of Majora's Mask, when the former became free and Majora itself being ultimately destroyed by Link, the world ceases to exist when the Hero of Time leaves the land to seemingly return back to Hyrule while searching for his missing Fairy friend, Navi. It's unclear whether this is canon due to the Encyclopedia being riddled with several errors.

Majora's Mask

Majora's Mask (base form)

When the Final Boss battle of Majora's Mask begins, Majora's Mask, as its standard appearance, comes to life and grows hair-like tentacles. To defeat it, Link must first stun it with any projectile by hitting it in the back. This will make it collapse to the ground, allowing Link to strike it with his Sword. Alternatively, Link can transform into Zora Link and use his Boomerang fins. When Targeting the Mask, the fins will fly behind it, hitting its back. Additionally, Deku Link can burrow into the flower designs on the ground, protecting him from any attack. This also allows Deku Link to hit the Mask as it flies over him. After Majora's Mask has taken enough damage, the four Boss Remains will begin to attack Link as well, shooting energy balls at him. They can be defeated by shooting any type of Arrows at them. Majora's Mask will also start shooting fire beams at Link, which can be reflected back into it or the Boss Remains with the Mirror Shield. Majora's Mask also uses its tentacles to perform a whirling attack. The attack can be blocked, but it can also be countered with a Spin Attack, causing Majora's Mask to become stunned, allowing him to strike it down.

Majora's Incarnation

Majora's Incarnation (second form)

After the Mask form is defeated, it catches on fire and loses its tentacles, and then grows a set of arms and legs, as well as a tiny, one-eyed head with horns, becoming a humanoid shape. It also gains a young, feminine voice as well. This form of Majora's Mask will run very quickly around the room, pausing every now and then to perform a variety of dances, including the Moonwalk, Kozachok, pirouettes, and jumping jacks or to make taunting gestures at Link. Its only attack is a sudden rapid-fire barrage of energy balls it fires from its hands at random times, which can be very difficult to block or dodge. To defeat Majora's Incarnation, Link must hit it with either his Sword or Hero's Bow when it stops running and perform its dances. When hit, it will fall to the ground on its face and flail about. If it recovers without being hit, it will get up and taunt at Link. After being struck again with the Sword while it is down, it will get up again in pain. During this part of the battle, Majora's Incarnation makes humorous clucking and whooping noises as it runs and dances, and emits a high-pitched screech whenever struck.

Majora's Wrath

Majora's Wrath (true form)

After the final painful scream from Majora's Incarnation is heard, it stands up to assume its final form. With a loud heartbeat being heard, the muscles of its limbs begin to throb and inflate into an even more humanoid shape. A new demonic head then bursts forth from its neck, and whip-like tentacles shoot out from his hands, becoming Majora's Wrath, which is none other than the actual being behind Majora's Mask's evil, known as Majora. To defeat Majora's Wrath, Link must use a projectile weapon such as Light Arrows to stun it while it is immobile. He can then strike it with his Sword. It often jumps from one side of the arena to the other to dodge attacks, wickedly laughing at Link. Its attacks are fast-hitting, but slow to wind up, giving Link a window of opportunity to attack. Majora's Wrath attacks by whipping its tentacles three times, throwing dangerous giant spinning tops lined with spikes (when its health is low), grabbing Link and tossing him across the arena, and using a furious whipping attack with an accompanying shriek. Most of Majora's Wrath's attacks, although not highly damaging, have a very long reach which allows it to attack numerous times in succession and can be difficult to dodge. When finally defeated, Majora's Wrath unleashes one final scream in agony and the monster ultimately disintegrates into ashes in a blinding light as the room breaks apart, killing it, winning Link the final battle and ending the game. In the cutscene leading to the credits, the Moon also disintegrates due to Majora's defeat, rescuing Termina altogether.

A Link Between Worlds[]

In A Link Between Worlds, Majora's Mask can be seen hanging in Link's House, which later becomes Ravio's Shop. It is unknown if Majora's Mask in-game is the genuine article from Majora's Mask, as it is unclear how and when it would have been found in the Downfall Timeline, as well as how it would've ended up in Link's House. Majora's Mask cannot be worn, although Link can Wall Merge behind it to create an illusion of wearing it. Majora's Mask was likely placed in this game as a hint of the then-upcoming release of the Nintendo 3DS remake of Majora's Mask.[13]

Breath of the Wild[]

In Breath of the Wild, Majora's Mask appears as an Armor in The Master Trials DLC Pack. Obtaining Majora's Mask is the objective of the Side Quest "EX Treasure: Ancient Mask". Majora's Mask is mentioned in Misko's EX Journal in the Outpost Ruins, while Majora's Mask itself is hidden in a Treasure Chest at the Kolomo Garrison Ruins. After obtaining the Mask, Granté will begin selling it for 50 Rupees.[note 1] The Mask only offers 1 defense, but allows Link to approach multiple enemies, including Bokoblins, Moblins, and Lizalfos without provoking them to attack, therefore it is used for stealth.[3] Lynels are also affected in this manner, but will attack after a short amount of time. As a result, it practically has the power of Kilton's Bokoblin Mask, Moblin Mask, Lizalfos Mask, and Lynel Mask disguises all rolled into one.

Tears of the Kingdom[]

in Tears of Kingdom, Majora's Mask can be found in the Floating Coliseum, which is located directly underneath the Coliseum Ruins in The Depths. The floating Coliseum is home to five Lynel fights, and defeating them all will reward you with Majora's Mask in a Treasure Chest that was covered in Gloom.

Other Appearances[]

Majora's Mask (Himekawa)[]

Majoramanga

Majora in the manga

In an extra chapter of the Majora's Mask manga by Akira Himekawa it is explained that before the time setting of Majora's Mask, there was an evil creature which fed on the desires of humans who had come to try and claim its armor and be granted their wishes. A traveler then comes forward to the place where the monster lived and starts talking with the creature, where he finds that the monster itself wanted to die, being so miserable. The man then proceeded to pull out his bongo and started playing. The monster went into a trance and started dancing. The traveler played for three days straight, and on the third day, the beast dropped dead from dancing. The traveler then took its magical armor, but instead of wishing upon it, he carved it into a Mask in an attempt to seal the beast's power inside the Mask forever. The Mask was named Majora after the beast. The Mask had a spirit because Majora's evil power lingered on inside the Mask seeking a host, not resting until its wish was granted.

Super Smash Bros. Melee[]

In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Majora's Mask serves as a stage for Event 47, "Trophy Tussle 3." If all three opponents are defeated within three minutes and without losing the 2 lives granted, the player is rewarded with the Majora's Mask Trophy.

Hyrule Warriors[]

In Hyrule Warriors, Majora's Mask appears in the Majora's Mask DLC Pack as part of Lana's Skull Kid Clothes Costume. Majora's Mask also appears as an Item Card in the Termina Map from Adventure Mode, where it maxes out a Warrior's Special and Magic gauges for a single battle. Majora's Mask is also worn by the Skull Kid, who appears as a playable Warrior, and who also appears when Young Link summons the Moon during his Focus Spirit Attack. Majora's Masks are also Gold Materials which are dropped by Skull Kid in Hyrule Warriors Legends and Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U[]

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, Skull Kid wearing the Majora's Mask appears as an Assist Trophy. When summoned, he flips the stage upside-down, inverting the direction of the Fighters' movements. A Trophy of the Skull Kid wearing the Majora's Mask and another Trophy of the Mask itself can be bought from the Trophy Shop. In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Majora's Mask appears as an item in Smash Tour, inflicting 50% of damage to the user while doubling its stats.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

Majora's Mask appears several times in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It can be seen worn by the Skull Kid Assist Trophy, as its own Support Spirit, as well as part of the Skull Kid & Majora's Mask Primary Spirit. Majora's Mask is featured in two Mii Headgears which can be worn by any Mii Fighter, as the eponymous Majora's Mask and as part of the Skull Kid's Hat.

Trivia[]

  • During the battle with Majora's Incarnation, it can be heard "singing" part of the Death Mountain theme from The Legend of Zelda when spinning around.[15]
  • The Fierce Deity's Mask, the rare mask which transforms Link into his tremendously powerful Fierce Deity form, is said to be equally as dangerous as Majora's Mask itself.
  • Twilight Princess concept artwork of Ganondorf in Hyrule Historia bears what appears to be an effigy of Majora's Mask on his armor.[16]
  • In the original Japanese text, the Happy Mask Salesman states that the race that used the mask was destroyed.[17] Though this can be synonymous with "vanished" used in the English version. He also refers to the ones who sealed the mask away as "our ancestors", suggesting that the ones who sealed the mask away were Hylian and a separate party from the ones who used Majora's Mask in their rituals.[18] The "ancient ones" are not stated to be the same as the ancient tribe mentioned earlier. Also the ancient tribe is referred to as a tribe in the following line instead of "ancient ones", suggesting that they are separate.
  • Although usually the size of a traditional mask, during the final battle, the Majora's Mask is shown to become a gigantic scale, as the Mask itself is indeed the lowest form of Majora.
  • In the Japanese version of the game, the Moon Child wearing Majora's Mask specifically states he wants to play tag with Link. This is likely the reason why the Majora's Incarnation form runs away from Link and gives taunting gestures at times, as it seemingly demands the young hero to catch it.
    • In the Majora's Mask (Himekawa) manga, after giving the infamous Fierce Deity Mask to Link and then flies up inside the Moon, it tells him to catch it if he can, as the Mask indeed says Link must play a game of tag with it. Link himself is understandably confused but decides to "play" by transforming to Fierce Deity Link and follows Majora's Mask into the Moon.
  • Despite having a feminine voice in its actual form, Majora's Mask is referred to as "it" in-game.
    • In the Akira Himekawa manga, however, it is instead called as a male.
  • Majora in its Incarnation and Wrath forms is on-par in size with that of Ganon as seen in Ocarina of Time.
  • According to the Akira Himekawa manga adaptation of Majora's Mask, everything in Termina, its actions of controlling Skull Kid, and destroying the world using the Moon is all just a game to Majora, making the evil demon under the mask nothing less than a psychopath, as can be observed in-game. It also depicts the inside of the Moon as the world of its soul, giving a reason why the Moon disintegrates upon its defeat in the Nintendo 64 game and especially its 3DS remake.
  • The clucking sounds of Majora's Incarnation as its runs around during the final battle are actually the sound of Cuccos clucking.
  • The Fierce Deity Link form, due to its great raw power, makes the final battle against Majora's Mask significantly easier. However, although its usage is canon according to Hyrule Historia, some fans find using this particular transformation as a rather cheap way to defeat the game's main antagonist, due to it being capable of ending boss fights quickly.
  • Although commonly believed by fans that only Light Arrows are effective on Majora's Wrath, any other type of Arrow, including regular ones, can also stun the villain as it attacks. Sword blows would stun any of Majora's forms as well before taking damage from subsequent hits.
  • Interestingly, the shape of the Majora's Mask is that of a heart with spikes, referencing its corruption to users' minds upon wearing it, specifically the Skull Kid.
  • The roaring sound of Majora's Mask is a slowed down and distorted version of a stock sound effect from Jurassic Dinosaurs Sound Effects Library. This would later be reused in the Metriod series for the Hunter Ing when they are destroyed in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes.

Nomenclature[]

Mujura, the Japanese name for Majora, was created by Takaya Imamura, designer of the Mask and art director for the original game. He created the word by combining Imamura, his last name, with Jumanji.[19]

Notes

  1. Prior to the Version 1.3.3 Update, Granté would not sell any Armor that is exclusive to the Expansion Pass or The Master Trials DLC Pack. This meant that Majora's Mask could not be replaced if sold, which was noted in the description of the Item.[14] The description of Majora's Mask was changed in the Version 1.3.3 Update as it could now be replaced.[3]
