The Grappling Hook is a recurring Item in The Legend of Zelda series.[1] It enables Link to latch on to cantilevered ledges called Grappling Posts or Pegs,[2] as well as Treasure Chests in Phantom Hourglass,[2] and use them to swing across large distances to otherwise unreachable platforms.[3][4]
Location and Uses[]
The Wind Waker[]
In The Wind Waker, the Grappling Hook is given to Link as a gift from Medli after defeating the Moblins that had captured her at the summit of Dragon Roost Cavern.[5][6] It can be used to cross gaps by latching at specific targets. A separate function of the Grappling Hook is in the stealing of enemy Spoils.[7][8] Link can also use it to retrieve three Hearts from Princess Zelda during the final battle against Ganondorf.
When equipped aboard the King of Red Lions, the Grappling Hook becomes a crane, which allows Link to pull up Treasure Chests from the seabed.[9][10] These sunken chests can be found beneath Rings of Light scattered across the Great Sea.[11]
The Grappling Hook is said to have been used by the Rito people before they obtained wings to navigate the heights and upper levels of the mountain on Dragon Roost Island.[5]
Phantom Hourglass[]
In Phantom Hourglass, the Grappling Hook can be used in several ways. It can be used as a walkable tightrope,[2] which also allows Link to use items while he is over it. However, if Link uses the Grappling Hook again, the previous tightrope disappears.[2] Similar to a Slingshot, it is capable of blasting Link across large holes.[2] It can also be used as a kilter of weight, pulling Link towards heavy objects while bringing light objects to him.[12][2] Furthermore, it can also be used to reflect attacks. This is useful when redirecting Arrows when shooting certain types of eye switches that close when Link looks at them.
The Grappling Hook is obtained in the Temple of Ice. It is used to defeat the boss, Gleeok, for which all possible ways of use will be required. The Salvage Arm replaces the Grappling Hook's crane feature at sea.
Trivia[]
- In The Wind Waker, there is an Easter Egg that may occur if Link attempts to use the Grappling Hook crane near (but not directly on top of) a ring of light or a barrel: he will pull up a barnacle-covered pot and no musical fanfare will play. After discarding the pot, an Ocean Octorok will spawn nearby. These vases are most likely a reference to traditional Japanese octopus pots, or takotsubo, which are used to fish for octopus in Japan and the Mediterranean Sea.[13]
