Darmani III,[1] also known as Darmani the Third,[2] is a character in Majora's Mask, and is the Terminan counterpart of Darunia.

Biography[]

In life, Darmani III was a renowned Goron hero. He was considered the greatest warrior of his tribe and possible heir to the Goron throne.[3][4] He suffered a terrible accident when he ventured to Snowhead Temple to find and stop the culprit that was causing the devastating winter that threatened his people. On his way to the Temple, Darmani was knocked off the path and into the deep valley below by the blizzard caused by Biggoron and unfortunately lost his life.[5]

In his death, Darmani was doomed to haunt his somber grave in the Goron Graveyard. He became full of regrets and felt sorrow for failing his people. Although he cannot normally be seen with the naked eye as he is now a spirit, Link can find Darmani with the Lens of Truth at the Goron Village, where he will tell the young Hero of Time to follow him to the Goron Graveyard (where he becomes fully visible) before explaining why he died. Link then must heal his spirit by playing the "Song of Healing" to free him from his regrets. Upon doing so, Darmani III sees visions of when he was a famous hero and the Gorons cheering him on, alongside Link himself. Before passing on, Darmani decides to leave his own powers in the Goron Mask for the fellow Hylian hero, which allows Link to transform into Goron Link when worn.

When spring returns to Snowhead Region upon the defeat of Goht, the Goron Elder announces to Link his plans to step down as patriarch of the tribe and hand the position over to Darmani III, whom he mistakes Goron Link for due to his resemblance.[6]

Darmani III also enjoyed the Goron Races while alive and was a strong contender, as revealed by the Goron Elder's son.[7]

Trivia[]

  • Darmani III has a large scar on his stomach that is not featured on Goron Link. However, it is visible on the statue left behind when Link plays the "Elegy of Emptiness" as a Goron. This may be a battle scar, or perhaps the very wound from when he fell to his death.
    • His own scar resembles that of Sagat's from the Street Fighter fighting game series, whom has his on his chest by Ryu's powerful Shoryuken in the events of the original game.
      • The bead necklace Darmani wears is also similar to that of Akuma's from said series, who, like Darmani himself, is a dark skinned muscular warrior.
  • Darmani shares a similar fate with Mikau in that both are heroes of a non-Hylain race that have sadly perished through accidents and have given their souls onto Link through transformation Masks to make him fulfill their final wishes.
  • Darmani, unlike other Gorons including Goron Link, has gray skin rather than the usual light brown. He also has many tattoos around his body.
  • Darmani III being a Goron hero who died and is filled with regrets is coincidentally similar to the Hero of Time himself, who became the Hero's Spirit in Twilight Princess.
  • It is likely he was told by Kaepora Gaebora about Link's presence, and Darmani tells the young hero that the "Soaring one" would come and heal his sorrows.
  • Darmani as a Goron hero himself is likeky a reference to Darunia from Ocarina of Time being a descendant of such as explained by Link (Goron).
