The Poe Sisters are recurring characters in The Legend of Zelda series.[1][2] They are four unique Poe siblings that haunt and torment their respective residences, due to the unrelenting restlessness of their souls.
Background[]
In life, the Poe Sisters were four priestesses who worshiped at the Forest Temple in the distant past.[3]
Characteristics[]
Ocarina of Time[]
In Ocarina of Time, the Poe Sisters were four ghostly siblings named Joelle,[4] Beth,[5] Amy,[6] and Meg.[7] They haunted the Forest Temple for many years until Link was able to put their souls to rest. While most of the sisters are fought as regular enemies similar to ordinary Poes, Meg on the other hand serves as a Sub-Boss. The first three sisters require the Hero of Time to solve a puzzle within the Temple before facing them. When defeated, each yielded a different colored flame that illuminated a torch at the center of the temple.[8] When all four torches were lit, Link was granted access to the temple's basement by an elevator, where the dungeon's boss, Phantom Ganon, awaited Link's arrival.
Majora's Mask[]
In Majora's Mask, the sisters return, and haunt the Spirit House of Ikana. Unlike Ocarina of Time, they do not have major roles for the game's storyline, as the sisters serve as four optional mini-bosses, and can be fought by paying the Poe Collector thirty Rupees. Although the fights against them are identical to the prequel (though Joelle and Beth team up together), Link only has three minutes to defeat them, and his life cannot drop below three Hearts or else the Poe Collector stops the match.[9] The reward for defeating them is a Piece of Heart or a Purple Rupee if already completed.[10]
Trivia[]
- It is possible to take the Poe Sisters out of their invisibility (even when they perform the lantern twirl) by using a Deku Nut in Ocarina of Time. However, there is only a short time before they try to do the lantern twirl again.
- According to Tatl in Majora's Mask 3D, Meg is the youngest of the Poe Sisters while Joelle is the oldest. This, however, is likely a developer oversight, as in the original Nintendo 64 version, Amy is said to be the youngest while the next in order to oldest are Joelle, Beth, and Meg.
- In addition, Joelle is also referred to as "Jo".
- Like regular Poes, the Poe Sisters' laugh is actually a sped up version of Ganondorf's laugh in Ocarina of Time,[11] which is also shared by the original Garo Master.
- They bear some resemblance to the four Links created after Link pulls the Four Sword from its pedestal, as they share similar colors, albeit with slight differences in tone. This is most likely unintentional.
- Meg's tactic of splitting herself into four images while facing Link is referenced in the Pokemon franchise by the move "Double Team", specifically in its anime series.
- In Majora's Mask, if the Poe Sisters are defeated and Link returns back to the Spirit House, they will reappear behind the barrier, despite the Poe Collector claiming their souls are healed. They also cannot be battled again, as the Poe Collector himself had left the hut. They will also still appear had Link completed the Stone Tower Temple but cannot be fought.
Nomenclature[]
The names of the four Poe Sisters in Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask are the names of the sisters in the 1868 novel Little Women.
