I am! a man! of the sea!

The Captain, primarily known and referred to by his title, is a self-proclaimed "man of the sea" who captains the Thames, a large ship of salvagers located in the Aquvy region.[1] He looks like a humanoid walrus in a naval uniform and frequently smokes a large pipe.

Personality[]

The Captain prides himself on being a "man of the sea," which he proclaims by facing the camera at three different angles, enunciating each word with each camera shot. "Men of the sea", he claims, have courage and appetites, can hold their liquor[2], as well as help others.

His eccentric and bold demeanor makes him popular with the children aboard the Thames, one of whom even attempts to pantomime his "man of the sea" declaration.

He is well respected by his crew, though his helmsman, a delphinine demi-human named Hans, complains about him being "irresponsible".

In his youth, the Captain was briefly a pirate, during which he lost part of his leg.[3]

Xenogears[]

After the Goliath was shot down over the Aquvy region, Elehayym Van Houten and Fei Fong Wong are found adrift at sea by the Thames. The Captain gives the command to pull them in with the Thames' crane, along with their Gears.

Showing the two around the ship, the Captain makes a remark that normally, they wander the seas looking for "treasure" by salvaging with Gears or with the crane, but since they started a "big job" for the Ethos[4], they've only found little to no items. Since the Thames is dependent on the Ethos to buy their salvaged goods, the Captain felt they couldn't turn the offer down. The Captain supposes the next salvage the Ethos will have them do will be "buried treasure".[5]

After the Yggdrasil II is sighted being attacked nearby, the Captain is prepared to fire a few shots of the "big gun", which Hans reveals was just a "piece of junk" the Captain had attached to the Thames while he was drunk. Fei and Elly intervene instead in their Gears, and Hans maintains that the Thames will not interfere otherwise.

After the battle, the Captain meets and becomes fast friends with Bart, who he considers a fellow "man of the sea".[6]

The Captain and his crew manage to fend off his ship from an attack by Solarian Wels, though the Thames is later destroyed by the Seraph Angels by the late events of the second disc.

While Deus' awakening causes the Thames to sink, both the Captain and Hans survive, and are found in Shevat. The Captain mentions a new island that's been discovered called Duneman Isle, which he wants to travel to to search for more treasure.

Trivia[]

  • The theme of sailing salvagers who cite a general code of ethics is carried on by Rex, the protagonist of Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
