Hello! Matthew here with Seminole Hard Rock Support Services at Hard Rock International.

Over on the Hard Rock Cafe talk page, I've proposed splitting the Hard Rock Cafe page to Draft:Hard Rock International and Draft:Hard Rock hotels and casinos, in order to separate out text about the restaurant brand from the parent company and Hard Rock's properties. Another editor has supported the split but suggested I seek help with the page and section moves. I've submitted a request at Wikipedia:Proposed article splits, if you're able to take a look or recommend where else I could get some technical assistance.

In [1] you wrote the rule of thumb generally applied on Commons is that US law considered photographs to be published when they leave the confine of a commercial photographer and are passed to the client. This implies that studio portraits such as this one can almost always be assumed to have been published shortly after creation. Can you give a link to a Commons page or discussion that says so? Unfortunately, I am not aware that this has been codified into a guideline or policy page. The precedent that is usually cited is Commons:Deletion requests/File:Minerva Kohlhepp Teichert 1908.jpg, and particularly the explanation by resident US copyright expert CLindberg there is usually referred to in such discussions. Oh dear, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Minerva_Kohlhepp_Teichert_1908.jpg is tough reading. User:Clindberg does sound very knowledgeable, but only mostly sure; he writes "you could argue" and "If you take the view", and even starts with a printed expression of discomfort! The uploader has changed the licensing of each file multiple times, seemingly hoping that they'll eventually get things right. I'm trying to find out as much as I can from them about each image, but we seem to keep on going of in tangents. Thanks for trying to help sort that out. I'm not sure how to establish that the photo was published before 1989, though. Perhaps the uploader will further clarify. Would you mind also taking a look at User talk:MalborkHistorian#Non-free rationale for File:Obituary in the Stum district newspaper dedicated to Ferdinand Schulz and Bruno Kaiser (1929).jpeg? I don't think there's any justfication for this file's non-free use, but that can be resolved at FFD if needed; however, this does appear to be something that was clearly published and might now be within the public domain per c:COM:Poland or maybe even possibly {{PD-text}}. It also looks like the scan/recreation could be treated as c:Template:PD-scan for the uploader if the obituary is PD and OK to move to Commons. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:17, 4 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
