Thanks for the article! :) Ovinus (talk) 02:21, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
of course! Mind if I ask a question?
How exactly am I supposed to go about adding album covers to infoboxes again? I know to upload the file to wikimedia commons, and how non-free covers can still be used when there’s no substitute and a valid reason for having them, but when I try to upload a file into an infobox, it asks me to check off a box saying I have the rights to the picture, which obviously in these cases I don’t. However, there’s obviously gotta be a legitimate way to upload album covers into articles since the vast majority of album articles do have them. Am I missing something? Thanks! Elephantranges (talk) 02:24, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Good question. Don't upload non-free images to Wikimedia Commons, as they aren't allowed there; instead, upload them here, on Wikipedia. See Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard and click the white "Upload a non-free file" button, and follow the steps there. Unlike Commons, Wikipedia accepts limited use of non-free files. If you're curious about the nitty gritty, WP:NFCC lists the rules, but an album cover is usually okay. Hope that helps! Ovinus (talk) 02:55, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Ovinus: I might have meant Wikipedia, not Wikipedia Commons. Not sure, but I’ll use those links. Thanks! Elephantranges (talk) 03:35, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Ovinus: Hey, sorry, one more question.
So I uploaded images for the covers of Ghosts of the Forest, Lonely Trip, and Mercy, everything went well except when I added them to the infobox, they're a bit too big and I'm not exactly sure how to make them appear smaller in their respective articles. Checked the source for other articles to see what they did differently but found nothing. Any help would be appreciated, thanks! Elephantranges (talk) 04:10, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Nevermind, realized I just have to remove the [[ ]] surrounding the file name. Elephantranges (talk) 04:18, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. Yes, the template does some internal processing that means the brackets aren't necessary. And no need to apologize for asking questions! Ovinus (talk) 04:20, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the help! Elephantranges (talk) 04:22, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I have another question about album art images.
So I went through a couple of articles recently and replaced their (very low quality) album art images with some higher resolution ones, using the wizard and doing everything the right way (as far as I can tell).
The new images are showing in the infoboxes, but why is it that when I click on them to zoom in, it then shows the older, lower-quality versions of the images? And is there anything I can do to fix this? Thanks Elephantranges (talk) 23:29, 31 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yes dilemma

[edit]

I'm torn on the track listing at Tales from Topographic Oceans. I actually just noticed you made the same edit I tried to make back in November, only to have it reverted. I can see the argument that it falls under MOS:STYLEVAR, but for a long time the page had the track listing as a simple list. At some point in time, some editors started changing a lot of the recommended simple bullet style listings over to the template listings, even if the track listing didn't necessitate that. Then when folks like you and I try to change it back, we get reverted. So frustrating. Anyway, I think you were in the right when you changed it back in November. Cheers.—The Keymaster (talk) 10:30, 17 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Elephantranges.

We seem to have a difference of opinion on the how to present the recording information on a couple of Neil Young album pages. Several of his albums, particularly in the 70s, were recorded across different years and studios and feature different musicians on each track. I find it helpful to list this information for each song independently. I've adopted a format other users have employed, for example on Neil Young Archives Volume II: 1972–1976. I find this format is clean and easy to read. I would like to find a format that we can both support so that we don't find ourselves overwriting each other's work. What are your thoughts?

Alcuin Alcuin (talk) 22:50, 3 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I’m all for listing the recording dates and locations of each track. (Especially considering Stars n Bars does the exact same thing on its own lp label!)
I just think that listing the personnel for each song might cause the tracklists to become a bit cluttered, especially considering there’s Personnel sections for that exact purpose.
Elephantranges (talk) 23:13, 3 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Alcuin (talk · contribs) thoughts? Elephantranges (talk) 14:54, 5 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I dunno. I really haven't found a format that I'm happy with, other than what I had been doing. Personnel sections seem to be a good fit when the personnel is consistent for the whole album. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Albums/Album_article_style_advice#Alternative_track_listings track listings seems to give an example similar to what I've been doing. Concert for George is another example of a page that takes a similar approach. I'd be open to putting the personnel with date and place of recording in the personnel section, but it doesn't necessarily seem like it's made for that information. Also, I can't seem to find a format I like. I wish that bulleted lists left less space between the header and the first bullet. I guess what I'm saying is that I still like the idea of providing the recording information in the tracklist section when there is information available that is specific to each track. I'm still open to any other ideas or examples that address the concerns I share in this post. Alcuin (talk) 22:46, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I totally get what you mean. I think it's important to note that with the example linked above (Before These Crowded Streets), each song usually has no more than, like, two musicians listed underneath the song titles. The main issue I have is really just that with the entire personnel for each song being listed it kinda screws up the formatting when looking at the mobile site, if you know what I mean.
Personally I think that maybe this might be a good way to format tracklists and lineups, using, say, On the Beach as an example:
{{Track listing
| headline = Side one
| extra_column = Producer(s)
| title1 = Walk On
| extra1 =
| length1 = 2:40
| note1 = recorded at Broken Arrow Ranch, November 30, 1973
| title2 = See the Sky About to Rain
| length2 = 5:03
| note2 = recorded at Sunset Sound, March 29, 1974
| extra2 =
  • Young
  • Mark Harman
| title3 = Revolution Blues
| note3 = recorded at Sunset Sound, April 6, 1974
| extra3 =
  • Young
  • Harman
| length3 = 4:02
| title4 = For the Turnstiles
| note4 = recorded at Broken Arrow Ranch, December 14, 1973
| extra4 = Young
| length4 = 3:13
| title5 = Vampire Blues
| note5 = recorded at Sunset Sound, April 7, 1974
| length5 = 4:11
| extra5 =
  • Young
  • Harman
| total_length = 19:09
}}
{{Track listing
| headline = Side two
| extra_column = Producer(s)
| title1 = On the Beach
| note1 = recorded at Sunset Sound, March 28, 1974
| extra1 =
| length1 = 7:04
| title2 = Motion Pictures (For Carrie)
| note2 = recorded at Sunset Sound, March 26, 1974
| extra2 =
  • Young
  • Schmitt
| length2 = 4:20
| title3 = Ambulance Blues
| note3 = recorded at Sunset Sound, March 25, 1974
| extra3 =
  • Young
  • Schmitt
| length3 = 8:57
| total_length = 20:21
}}
==Personnel==
"Walk On"
(and so on and so forth for the rest of the songs...)
Maybe this formatting would be more concise? Idk Elephantranges (talk) 23:09, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
that did NOT come out the way I wanted. weird Elephantranges (talk) 23:10, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

FOTR

[edit]

Hiya there, I took a cursory glance at your GA nominated Fables of the Reconstruction article. I think that y've done a pretty good job, the prose, and the music and reception sections are solid as far as I am concerned, though I wanted to draw yr attention to a few things:

1. uDiscoverMusic may be considered unreliable per this 2020 discussion Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Albums/Archive_62#Unreliable_Source it mentions other sources yet provides no link to them (for example: the Melody Maker article referenced can be found here (p. 70)) fundamentally it isn't bad though.

2. not a lot of stuff/sources on recording, promotion and release history. If you want to, you can look at some sources ive listed a few sources from the internet archive on its talk page that may provide additional specifics/content; it's wholly up to you (i don't plan on editing this page any time soon)

3. Also, I suggest that you should use Wikipedia:Peer review on an article before nominating it to GA

Hope this helps. Otherwise, keep up the good work!! // Chchcheckit (talk) 16:18, 6 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey thanks! As for uDiscover Music, I was under the impression that it is a valid source for info on the recording/production on an album, but not so much on the reception of an album or its cultural impact (due to an obvious conflict of interest there). That being said, I wrote all this before I found access to a number of R.E.M. biographies that I imagine have all that same info and more (which I utilized on the article for Reveal (R.E.M. album), which definitely turned out more detailed than this one) so I’ll probably go back to this one at some point and re-do those sections anyways.
Thanks for taking a look at it and giving feedback! Elephantranges (talk) 17:58, 6 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
