The Brazilian Woman's Party (Portuguese: Partido da Mulher Brasileira, PMB) is a political party in Brazil. It was founded in 2008 and obtained registration from the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) on 29 September 2015, adopting the electoral number 35. In December 2024, it had 55,940 members.

History

[edit]

In November 2015, the party welcomed seven federal deputies, all men: Domingos Neto, Ezequiel Teixeira, Franklin Lima, Toninho Wandscheer, Valtenir Pereira, Victor Mendes and Weliton Prado.

In December, the party had as representatives Senator Hélio José and 22 federal deputies, including only two women: Brunny Gomes and Dâmina Pereira. The female representation in the party's caucus, even when it had only 20 deputies, was below the average for the Chamber of Deputies. The large influx of deputies to the PMB, mostly from minor parties, sparked accusations that the party was using funds from party subsidies in exchange for their membership, a claim that the party denies.

In April 2016, the party's caucus collapsed as 20 deputies suddenly left, leaving the party with only one representative in the Chamber, who would also depart in April 2018. Hélio José also left the party, joining the Brazilian Democratic Movement.

In the 2016 municipal elections, the party successfully elected 4 mayors and 216 councilors. In the 2018 general election, it saw 3 state deputies elected but failed to secure any Senate or Chamber seats. As PMB failed to overcome the new electoral threshold by not reaching 1.5% of the valid votes in the election to the Chamber of Deputies, it was denied access to party subsidies and free electoral advertising time on radio and television.

In the second round of the presidential election, the party endorsed Workers' Party candidate Fernando Haddad, arguing that the opposing candidate, Jair Bolsonaro, would "sink the country." In January 2019, the party announced it would adopt a "conscious opposition" to Bolsonaro's government, viewing him as a threat to indigenous and LGBT rights.

However, in March 2021, it was revealed that PMB president Suêd Haidar had promised Bolsonaro complete control of the party if he decided to join. On 24 April, PMB's national convention approved a name change to "Brazil 35" in an effort to align with Bolsonaro, who had left the Social Liberal Party and was facing difficulties registering the Alliance for Brazil.
