Note that the peak Großglockner is not the same as the nearby mountain pass road of the same name (for tourism marketing reasons), whose highest point is in fact almost 1300m lower than the actual peak and not even very close (you can just see the peak well from the road). Unfortunately, many riders and drivers (and media) also call the road simply "Großglockner", which is false and confusing. Heiligenblut is the southern base town and municipality, and he died somewhere there. The finish of the race route was near Großglockner again, in Kals, which is situated on the other (Tyrol) side of Großglockner, which increased the confusion.
