This is an extremely fine Phaidon survey of the oft derided Brutalist movement in architecture. A short introductory essay highlights the movements utopian; quotes scattered through out mostly act as provocations to thought about the form and purpose of this concrete aesthetic. But the real prize of this volume are the gorgeous B&W photos of some of the most stunning buildings of the 20th century from around the globe. This Brutal Worlds amply demonstrates the diverse forms, sacred and profane, absurd and profound, of this most misunderstood and under appreciated architectural movement. Highly recommended for fans of progressive architecture and utopianism. ( )
