Really fun illustrations with tongue-in-cheek humor.

The illustrations (by David "No!" Shannon) are fantastic and the story is good, too. Any little boy who dreams of being a pirate will enjoy this. ( )

I give this book a low rating for one reason and one reason only: I am NOT a fan of the artwork. It's nothing against David Shannon. Or maybe it is. It just doesn't wow me like I want it too ( )

Jeremey Jacob joins a crew of pirates and learns what a normal day is like with them. Eventually, they bury the treasure they have and return Jeremey to shore.
This book uses a lot of imagination and the call-and-response would be fun to do during a reader's theatre. However, I wish there would have been one or two facts about pirates in the book. ( )

This book follows a little boy as he tags along with a pirate ship adventure. He loves that he doesn't have to eat his veggies or use his manners. Soon after he finds the hardships of pirate life and becomes thankful for the life he has.

This is a cute book. The story is about a little boy who accidentally meets pirates and joins their ship. He talks about how much fun it is to not have to eat veggies, or have a bed time. Then, there is a big storm while they are on the ocean. He then realizes how scary it is that he doesn't have anyone to make him feel safe, or tuck him in at night. The pirates need a place to bury their treasure, and the boy suggests hiding the treasure in his backyard, and that's how he gets home. This is a good book to teach kids about the importance of rules. ( )

This is a great book that allows kids to have their imagination run wild and allow them to learn while being entertained. I would use this book in a lesson if the lesson ties in with adventure and growth.

This book tells the story of a young boy named Jeremy Jacob who begins a normal day on the beach with his family. While his parents are busy with his siblings, a ship of pirates come and welcome him on board. They show you the life of the pirate, the language of the pirates, and some of the problems they face. The illustrations capture the imagination of young Jeremy Jacob.

This book has been a favorite of one of the students in my class because he is obsessed with Pirates. It tells the story of young Jeremy Jacob and his wish to run off and be a pirate. Luckily, there are some scurvy devils around that need his help. Jeremy soon finds, however, that being a pirate isn't all its cracked up to be.

Genre: Fiction

Summary: In this book, Jeremy Jacob was having a beach day with his family when all of the sudden a pirate ship appears. The pirates tell Jeremy that they need help hiding their treasures and Jeremy jumps on board to help them. On the ship, Jeremy learns how to talk like a pirate. Later, Jeremy realizes that being a pirate means that he will no longer get goodnight kisses or play soccer. He decides that going home is much better. The pirates take him home where they bury their treasure and they tell him that he is a good pirate.

Uses in the Classroom: I think this is a great book to read to my class because it is engaging and it has great vocabulary. It is a great way to introduce children to bigger words. You could also use this as a writing opportunity and have students write about a made up adventure that they had one time.

This cute children's book tells the story of a little boy on vacation at the beach with his family when he is surprised by pirates that take him to their ship to live the life of a pirate with him. Through the use of unique dialogue and juicy vocabulary, the story of how the little boy spent a day being a pirate and realizing he's better off as a regular boy is told. I think student would really enjoy this book because it is filled with humor and creative fantasy that children can relate to, such as bedtimes and eating vegetables. This would be a good book to introduce to children when working on vocabulary and teaching dialogue. ( )

How I Became a Pirate is a great fun book to read aloud to kids. It has fun pirate voices to use and a good sense of humor from the main character. Jeremy Jacob one day was at the beach when a pirate ship appeared and asked him to join them in their pirate ways. Jeremy loved being a pirate at first. He loved that they had no parents telling him what to do and no rules to follow. He didn't need to use manners and he could be as messy as he wanted. As time went on though he started ti miss his parents and how they tucked him in at night and read him bedtime stories. He also was missing his soccer practices. So he decided it was time to go back home, and convinced the pirates of the best secret place to hide their treasure, his back yard. Jermey made it back just in time for soccer practice. This is a good book to teach about appreciating the kind things parents do. It can also be a good lesson on why it can be important to listen to and follow the rules! ( )

In this book, Jeremy becomes a pirate for a day after meeting some pirates when he was at the beach with his family. The pirates come to shore and declare they need to bury a treasure, and Jeremey gets back on their ship with them to help them. In the end, after spending a day with the pirates, Jeremy decides that he does not want to be a pirate.
This book is a good example of a fantasy because there are both imaginative aspects as well as realistic aspects. In this book, the imaginative aspects involve the pirates and the timeline of the story regarding the pirates. It is not realistic that a young boy goes off with pirates, sails around the seas with them, sleeps on their ship, and then returns home the next day. Also, while pirates are realistic in a historical context, pulling them out of their time in history and placing them into the current time makes it imaginative. The realistic aspects of the story are the characters, because they are human, as well as the world it is set in.

The tale of Jeramy Jacobs and his induction into piracy is good book for elementary readers. Jeramy's adventure with Braid beard and his swashbuckling pirate crew keeps the reader interested from start to finish. When a book gives you the opportunity to talk like a pirate you take it! ( )

Jermey was just a boy playing in the sand when he noticed some pirates. he went with them onto the ship after they all came to land and spoke with him. They need to find a place to bury the treasure they had. Jermey tried teaching them how to play soccer but the ball went over board and was eaten by a shark, on the water a strom came in and Jermey was scared, at that point jermey realized he didnt want to be a pirate. They went to land and burried the treasure and drew a map and told jermey to guard the treasure and that he was a good pirate.

Personal Reaction
This is a great pirate book for kids and adults, everyone will find something amusing in this story. I love the way his imagination just carries him on this path with the pirates.

Classroom Extension
We can make our own ship on the playground, and make eye patches and go outside and pretend to be Pirates.
We can make a fake treasure that the teacher hides outside and all the little pirates have to find it.

This is such a cute story! It is an exciting fantasy about every kid's dream - no rules! Towards the end, the boy realizes he would rather be home where someone will tuck him into bed and where he can play soccer. I would absolutely suggest reading this book! ( )
