I loved "Don't Worry, Douglas" for many reasons! The first and probably most significant reason why I loved this book is because of the message it presents. It presents a message that a lot of kids can relate to and connect with: which is that even when you mess up and make a mistake your parents still love you. In the book this message can be seen when Douglas comes home with his hat that his dad gave him, shredded. He was worried that his dad would be mad, but he was very forgiving and loving to Douglass! This book was written in third person, and many animals in the book have dialogue. Another reason why I really liked this book because it consisted of all animal characters but still included human-like messages and qualities. The show more language in this book is very simple and would be easy for students of all ages to follow. Finally I loved the illustrations in this book. They are very cartoon-like and silly, which adds humor to the story and the plot. The animals in this story are very colorful and show a lot of emotions, despite being cartoon-like. show less
While I enjoyed the book Don’t Worry, Douglas! By David Melling, I wasn’t blown away. One of the things that I enjoy most about this book is that David Melling is both the author and illustrator. So the illustrations compliment the text perfectly. The characters are also believable although they are humanized animals they are well developed. As you have a concerned son after ruining the hate his dad gave him, and an understanding dad. The writing however is not the most engaging and is somewhat dull. There is very little emotion in the text, I was bored as I read it and it never reached a climax. The message of the book is to be honest and admit to your mistakes.
Douglas gets a new hat from his dad, but while Douglas is doing cartwheels, the hat snags and becomes completely unraveled. His dad is understanding, giving Douglas his own hat.

The final endpapers might be the best part of this book: animals in all kinds of ridiculous hats.

Douglas' dad gives him a special gift, a new woolly hat! But then something terrible happens. Douglas's hat gets caught on a tree and turns into one long string of spaghetti! How will he ever tell his dad? Douglas learns that it takes a BIG bear to tell the truth in this heartwarming story.
Summary: Douglas the bear gets a new hat from his dad but while showing it off the hat falls apart. After trying so hard to fix the hat he finally decides its best to tell the truth to his dad. In the end his dad understood and gave him his hat instead.

Age: Primary

Critique of Genre: This book is fantasy because bears don't wear hats in real life and there are many other events in the book that would not happen in real life.

Art Media: Watercolor and Digital
