Went past Helene's digs & am heartened to see that they have named the building "Charing Cross House" with a brass plaque which tells the story of her "84".

I used to work down the block from that building. Actually started working there just months before she died. So close, so far. Still, great tribute.

I just passed by the building last week. The doorman saw me and told me to have a look in the lobby -there was a collage-type dedication to Helene Hanff that was rather touching. Why didn't I have my camera? Anyway, I spoke with the doorman a little further - he was working there when Helene Hanff was in residence, and he said that she'd sit out in the front and watch talk to everyone walking their dogs. It would have been fun to see her.

Thanks, ladygata! I'll stop in there when next in town, which is soon.
