southern fiction from 90's or early 2000's

I read a book told in first person from the perspective of a young, southern, spunky girl. It was funny and moving. One scene that stands out was that she had to suck the venom out of a man's leg that had been bit by a poisonous snake. I believe a reviewer on the book cover compared this character to Scout from To Kill a Mockingbird. Anyone know the book I'm talking about? I really want to read it again. Thanks. Judy

Possibly Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech, or Absolutely Normal Chaos by the same author?

>2 astralux: Sadly, no. I have read Walk Two Moons. I love Sharon Creech! But this was an unfamiliar author, not well known. I actually got the title from Chinaberry books years ago when they used to send out catalogs. I couldn't even find it through them.
