This is the 3rd edition of Conrad's outstanding review of current issues. Previous editions came out in 2008 & 2012 so we may have to wait until 2020 for the next one. What with the rapid pace of events, I'd like to see one every year or two. And because of her highly readable, informative, organized approach, I believe I'll read anything else she writes.
There are just a few books that I have read more than twice -- Gatsby, Mockingbird, Catcher, Ulysses, The Dubliners -- & Huckleberry Finn. Not just a kid's book (tho every boy & girl should read it).
I read this selectively, along with online articles, as I listened to Sony's "Complete Works of Stravinsky". The book is essential for a thorough study of Stravinsky's compositions. Scholarly but easy to understand & entertaining. This is in the series "A Listener's Companion" which, judging by this volume, is a reliable resource for music study.
Entertaining read, great insights into the political game, & memorable anecdotes. Some may be put off of this because Matthews is on MSNBC but it's non-partisan. He shows true admiration for Reagan's abilities, for example.
Woman tends to her mother-in-law for a couple of years then visits her occasionally at a nursing home. Grouses constantly.
When I finished this, I wanted to hop back on at the beginning. This is on my Top 10 Books Ever list.
Giddins is best as a jazz writer but he writes about film well also.
First read this in the late 50s when in my late teens. It had a great impact, showing me an alternate, exciting lifestyle. I've reread it a couple of times but don't think it holds up that well. It probably needs to be read when one is young.
This is not intended to be a book about the best 1,000 films; it’s Thomson’s thoughts on films that are worth seeing for a variety of reasons. All the write-ups are one page or less. Like Pauline Kael, Thomson has his own unique perspective on films -- the “Personal” in the title should be taken seriously – so I often don’t enjoy films I’ve watched on his recommendation but his observations are worth reading.
