One of my absolute favourite books. I bought the Norwegian translation because of the nice cover and had it sitting on my shelf for a few years before I read it, with no expectation whatsoever. What a surprise! These short stories range from the weird to the absurd, often playing on classic stories or literature, like the alternative version of the story about the Trojan Horse. Strange, memorable and brilliant!

Wanted to give this no stars, but that's not really an option, so I'll have to give it a half star.
This is quite possibly one of the worst books I have ever read, and I will forever regret not throwing it out without finishing and spending those hours of my life on something more worthwhile, like watching reruns on TV or cleaning the fridge. True, I'm not a fan of the genre, which obviously affects my opinion, but still...
Rubbish, rubbish, rubbish.

Three stars for the story (so far - I need some more to make up my mind about it); five stars for the art.

I don't get it, I really don't. OK, so I'm not a big fan of the period or the genre, but I liked Pride and Prejuice and, I suppose, Sense and Sensibility. This book, however, is just sad. The characters and the plot left me equally bored and annoyed. It wasn't quite bad enough for me to give it up without finishing (thus the 2 stars), but this sort of book just leaves me a bit... aggravated.

Some books classified as children's literature or YA fiction transcend the label, and are as enjoyable or interesting for adults as for younger readers. A larger number of children's books, however, are most suitable for children. That does not make them inferior literature, it just means they do what it says on the tin.
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, in my opinion, belongs to the latter category. It's not bad, but I have trouble understanding the fuss over this book. I would probably have liked it, perhaps even loved it, if I had read it 15-20 years ago. Now, whilst I did not dislike it, I found the style rather unengaging, and the story a bit too weak and predictable.

Utval av 55 balladar og 2 stev, med ordliste. Innleiinga gir litt informasjon om uttale, grammatikk, staving osb. Elles inneheld boka ingen bakgrunnstekstar eller tolkingar av visene. Pluss for at språket/stavinga er dialektbasert, noko som gjer at rim, rytme og opphavleg blir bevart i stor grad, men sidan dette av og til òg gjer tekstane noko vanskelege å forstå, kunne ordlista godt vore enda meir utfyllande.
