Germs Are Not for Sharing (Board Book) (Best Behavior Series) (edition 2006)by Elizabeth Verdick (Author), Marieka Heinlen (Illustrator)This book explains how germs are everywhere and lets kids know that germs are very small and can't be seen. It also teaches them what to do if they need to sneeze and how to wash their hands. Along with teaching kids how to wash their hands, this book also lists the ten good times to wash their hands. This book is so adorable. I liked the illustrations--they aren't overly adorned or complicated. They're just right for this age group. The kids look happy, which further shows the association between good health and a positive disposition. Kids can easily grasp the concept. The lessons in this book are priceless, especially during this time. It is educational without bombarding a kid with too much information. This book, rather than focus on what germs are, teaches student's how to not spread germs in many different ways. My reaction to this book is that even thought the children see how to not spread germs they will still spread them without knowing. In the classroom I would have them practice not spreading germs when they are sick or even if they are not sick we would practice so when they are sick they know what to do. This book was a easy fun read for young kids. This book was also informative for kids to learn how to keep clean yet at the same time and take away the germs. Washing hands is very important at there age because there are so many germs going around. This book has great vivid pictures to make it fun for the students and any children to read and fall in love with. The main point of this book is to explain to kids where germs come from and how to take care of them so they do not get sick. This book was very well written and yet at the same time charming. I enjoyed reading this book and would suggest it to teachers, parents, and anyone else that has young kids that are trying to make the idea of cleaning fun for them. I also enjoyed the wording of the books it was simple yet easy for the kids to understand. In this book, Germs Are Not for Sharing, the author emphasizes the importance of health and actions to take when someone is sick. Young elementary school aged children often need to be reminded of the precautions they should take on a daily basis. Whether it's coughing or bathroom manners, this book nicely reminds children of routines for staying healthy. This informational book is a great way to teach students about the importance of washing hands and self care. This book also teaches kids why covering your mouth and flushing the toilet is curial. This book has accurate information but uses kid friendly words. Overall this book would be great to use for preschoolers-3rd and hopefully beyond that they are doing these things. Illustrations: Graphics, computer images 1) This book is very informational to help kids learn how to stay clean and not spread germs. It goes through several different situations teaching children what they should do in the situation. 2) I like this book and think it could be very useful for younger kids who are learning to do things on their own and learning about hygiene. 3) You could use this in a classroom to learn about how to wash your hands after you for to the bathroom, or how to not eat food off the floor. Also, if a time comes where all the kids are starting to get sick, like flu season, you could use it so educate kids on how not to spread germs and get sick. Summery: A book to teach children that sharing germs is not good. When we are sick, we need to wash our hands and try our hardest to not spread the bad germs. Personal: I think it is very important for kids to know about personal hygiene. Classroom: Read the book right before flue season. Discuss the book with the children and try to help them understand why we don't share "bad" germs. This book shows different scenarios of children having germs and what they can do to get rid of them, such as throwing away a dropped cookie, or sneezing into your sleeve when you sneeze. This book is basic information for me, but it reminds me of the kindergartners I taught and about how dirty little kids can be. So I felt grateful for a book like this. This book does wonders for teaching children about germs and how to handle them. It is very important that we teach the children about germs when they are little because they are most often more susceptible to germs and their sicknesses. Teaching the children about germs through this book is not only a good way to introduce classroom rules (such as washing your hands after using the bathroom or covering your nose when you sneeze.) but to teach the children about hygiene in general. I think this was a good book for two reasons. I liked the word choice used in this story. It was geared toward very young children, so there are words used that are sounds effects and these are fun to read. I also like that this story can teach the readers something. It instructs readers how to avoid getting sick and getting other people sick. As someone who tried to avoid germs at all costs, this something that I find to be important. The big idea in this book is to instruct readers what to do if they are sick and how to prevent themselves from getting sick in the first place. This book explains about germs and how it is important to be clean and how to be clean. This book is easy to understand and is fun. Classroom Activities: 1. Go over proper hand washing rules 2. I would try to get a black light or some way to show the students how many germs are actually on their hands 3. I would have the students create a sink with bubbles made from cotton balls. Summary: This book teaches small children the importance of how to care for germs. Children need to be careful and wash their hands regularly. Personal Reaction: It is a great book for every child to know. Classroom Extensions: 1. Have the students bring tissues. 2. Have all the children wash their hands properly. I really liked this book as it touches on hand washing, what to do when you sneeze, after you flush the toilet, etc. For example, a student in the book sneezed and the author pointed out two things the student can do: ask for a kleenex or get one yourself. Processes are also modeled such as washing your hands. It shows children getting soap and using water to wash off soap. It also has good repetition as "germs are not for sharing" is repeated throughout the story. The back of the book has tips for parents and caregivers regarding how to prevent spreading germs as much as possible. |
