It was great to get back onto a murder case with Turner and Fenwick. I have read almost all of Mr. Zubro's books but still think the Paul Turner and Buck Fenwick series is best. A dirty cop is found murdered at an exclusive gay leatherman's party with a huge dildo up his butt and a string of orgasm balls down his throat. Turner and Fenwick are assigned to the case which leads them down dangerous trails on massive corruption in the Chicago Police Department. They are constantly blocked by the show more blue code of silence among the cops until they finally unravel the conspiracy. I love the banter between the gay Turner and the straight Fenwick that runs through the book. The scenes at the leather party were well written and while there was no sex in the book, it was talked about. The story flowed well and kept me guessing at the why did they do it right to the end. Zubro in true form turned out an excellent, fun mystery. I recommend all of Mark Richard Zubro's mysteries to anyone wanting a good light mystery. show less

Mike and Joe are arrested by law enforcement from Joe's home planet because Joe has violated the policy of non interference with less developed planets and because of his relationship with Mike, who is now in possession of serious alien implant tech which cannot be removed without killing him.
The chase through a blizzard in Illinois was good but once we got off Earth the author's weaknesses as an SF writer came to the fore. The alien society and the events there made no sense. "Alien Home" show more ended with a cliffhanger and I like our heroes so I continued with "Alien Victory", which made even less sense, and I gave up after 5 chapters. show less

In this police procedural from the early 1990s a Chicago alderman and professor of English literature is poisoned and detectives Paul Turner and Buck Fenwick are ordered to investigate.
I wanted to like this book but 2/3 of the way in I had to admit I didn't really care who did it. The book only really gained interest halfway through the penultimate chapter. And I don't really get why that particular question made the murderer confess. I'll give him another chance with the next in the series show more but my series junkie juices aren't flowing. show less

This is probably one of the most solid books in the Paul Turner series. Set in a place called The North Woods in Canada, the story read more like a fun mystery than the more usual police procedural Zubro tends to plod through. The issues of bullying (in a number of forms) and homophobia are handled quite well as well as showing just how blind some parents are to their own faults and those of their children. Well worth reading.
