If you've ever read the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews and thought, "but make it queer" then you have this. It has the added bonus of me liking Alexis Hall's humor and writing better. It's also lighter in tone overall in my opinion. (3.5)}

** spoiler alert ** Great characters and a refreshing romance — I loved that this had a trans main character and yet no overt transphobia. There was a lot of aaaaaangst here and there, but that is a characteristic of historical romance and this at least felt like realistic worries and concerns. Also, while I loved their happy ending, I hate that wealth and power are the mechanism.

I was honestly confused by the other main plotline, with Miranda. The scene in in the brothel was bizarre and weirdly ambivalent— what were they going to do if Amberface didn’t tell them what they needed to know? Give up? Wait, they did give up. And then he… told them after all??? What a weird and pointless scene. Glad Miranda was able to rescue herself because wow, not a lot of help coming.

Also it did feel quite long.

This is my favorite Alexis Hall book that I've read so far. I fully ate this up, I can't believe how much I absolutely loved this. This was a book I truly needed to read. I believe that this is Alexis Hall's best work by far, everyone needs to read this. I loved the story so much, but I just adored the characters that I'm just sad to leave them. I want more of all of them, I don't even care what it's about I just want more. Gosh, I just love this book so much and can't recommend it enough.

“Confounding Oaths,” by Alexis Hall

This was an interesting gender bender retell of pride and prejudice with m/m relationship. I did like the book, but I was a bit disappointed that it was so insta love right away when the book was a retelling of pride and prejudice which is an enemy to lover’s type book. What I did like about the book is that it was M/M which was a good difference to the original and I liked that it was through the viewpoint of a transgender person during 1815, both add extra complications to the romance and lifestyle during the time period. 3 out of 5 stars.

Thank you for the ARC, Netgalley.
