Halevy's History of the English People… by Élie Halévy
History of English politics and overseas misadventures during the time 1895-1905. Covers the second Boer war, and the changing international tensions between the main powers of the time. Readable, but not engrossing.
Élie Halévy was a French philosopher and historian who wrote studies of the British utilitarians, a history of 19th-century England and the acclaimed book of essays, Era of Tyrannies. The 19th century English utilitarians shared in a movement for human rights that was at the time sweeping through Europe.
I keep suggesting that my ladies book group read and discuss this but somehow they seem to prefer Anita Shreve
