Short biography
Historian and essayist Marc Fumaroli was a professor at the Collège de France and a member of the Academie Française (1995). In recognition of his signal contribution to the history of French and European literature, the Collège de France created a chair in rhetoric for him. The subjects in literature and the arts he addressed, together with his consumate literary style and his acute analysis of both the higher educational system and government cultural policy, secured his election to the French Academy. A native of Marseille, Dr. Fumaroli is the author of over 150 articles and more than 20 books, including Heros et orateurs, Rhetorique e dramaturgie corneliennes (1990); L'Etat culturel. Essai sur une religion moderne, (1992); Trois institutions litteraires (1994); and more recent studies of Poussin (2001), Richelieu (2002) and Chateaubriand (2004). Marc Fumaroli was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 1997. He died June 24, 2020 in Paris, France at the age of 88.

The book, "When the World Spoke French," written by Marc Fumaroli and translated from French to English by Richard Howard, is well written and engaging. Each chapter of the book covers a different eighteenth century Enlightenment writer. These brief biographies encompass a wide number of individuals, such as,Francesco Algarottias well as perhaps lesser know lights including Lugi Riccoboni. Along with the biography is a sample of writing. These writings are quite often personal letters, and show more portions of essays. Many of the writers were not in fact French, but wrote in French and where highly influenced what was happening in France.

Anyone who is interested in eighteenth century history should read Fumaroli's book. I appreciated finding out more about what was taking place in the rest of the world while America was stirring towards Revolution. It really put things into perspective. Fumaroli's writing style makes the people in the book come alive. The adding together of all these individuals and their writing make for a sweep through European history that is far more interesting than the typical history book.

The 18th Century featured not only the Enlightenment, but also the supremacy of the French language, then almost inseparable from core notions & fashions of the era. In a tone not devoid of *esprit*, modern 17th & 18th Century authority Marc Fumaroli presents a distinguished portrait gallery of cosmopolitan Europeans (ie: other than from France), plus a few Americans, who conversed, corresponded, & authored works in French. Telling excerpts from their writings are included. A lighthearted show more book with many erudite details. show less
I won this book thru Library Thing and thought it was a really tough read. It took me a while to get through the book and it was comparable to reading a literature book. Basically, the book is comprised of a bunch of letters from the Enlightenment period and from some well-known names and not so well-known people of this time frame. I do not care for this time period and I am not much into French History. I also feel that something was lost in the translation from French to English. If you show more are into this type of history, you might like the book a little better than I did. show less

Fumaroli is a professor emeritus at the Collège de France and a member of the British Academy, the Académie française, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Société d’histoire littéraire de la France. Vergnaud is an editor and literary translator who has translated works from the French by authors such as Mohand Fellag, Joy Sorman, Marie-Monique Robin, and Scholastique Mukasonga.

An interesting history of the flow of ideas through Europe from the 15th to the 18th show more Century. The letters were a source of exchanging ideas in the time when communications across distances were very primitive. Examining the writings of Petrarch, Erasmus, Descartes, Montaigne, and others Fumaroli creates the web of exchange. The idea of mass-produced journals was still a long way away. Also, the ideas exchanged may not be readily accepted by those in power. Humanism versus the clergy would extend into the 18th century. Index Librorum Prohibitorum was a list of banned books from the Roman Church. The Spanish Inquisition did not officially end until 1834. Too public of exchange of ideas could bring serious consequences.

An interesting study of the flow of intellectual history in Europe. The spread of ideas from Rennesance Italy throughout Europe. The moral and social questions that became the modern Western world are captured in their earliest stages. The Republic of Letters was an unofficial university for a state without a state. A complex book and not for those looking for an easy read.
