I read this as part of the omnibus [b:The Collected Plays, Vol. 1: We Won't Pay! We Won't Pay! and Other Works|74221|The Collected Plays, Vol. 1 We Won't Pay! We Won't Pay! and Other Works|Dario Fo|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1386924209s/74221.jpg|71814] translated by Ron Jenkins.

I really enjoyed the satire in this! Jenkins must have updated some of the text as there was at least on Hilary Clinton reference (!). I am sorry that I missed the first English production of this play, which happened at the ART not far from my home... however, even though it would be better to see it performed, this is a play that reads well. Is he just composing a better story or wanting us to believe an alternate reality was really what happened? I don't know. But he clearly offered no evidence just a coherent telling of a story. There are no citations, just retellings. I wondered if all the names of the characters were changed to purely fictional characters would this be an interesting tale. It's the basing of this tale on real people that makes it so fascinating. Could this have been what really happened? Unlikely but maybe suspending disbelief is what makes this work. I had trouble buying the story. Too goody two shoes for my taste.… (more)

An AMAZING tour de force that is excellent in every scene and almost every line. It was a pleasure to read and was funny, cynical, deep and absurd at the same time. Dario Fo creates like no other-- this play is highly inventive and original. I recommend it for anyone interested in drama.
