Examines the mythology that's been created around the presidency of Ronald Reagan. Having lived through that era, I've always been somewhat baffled by the hero-worship that Reagan's followers indulge in. I remember a more mediocre president, and this book corresponds well with my memories.

Despite the polarizing title of this book, the author is surprisingly even-handed in discussing Reagan's legacy, is more focused on tearing down the myth that has grown up around Reagan rather than the man himself. Bunch takes great effort show the truth about what really happened during the Reagan presidency, although I would have liked him to spend even just a paragraph or two discussing some important events for the benefit of those who were not yet born or are too young to remember the events as they unfolded, such as the evacuation of Beirut or the Iran-Contra scandal. Bunch even admits some admiration for Reagan, especially on nuclear disarmament. Since I have lived through much of this history I did not read the last several chapters. I mainly note that the author does not appear to realize that resource shortages and other problems may make the college he advocates for irrelevant or impossible. Advanced education has always been a luxury the age of fossil fuels made it both possible and necessary to extend that luxury to a greater proportion of the population, but that is not IMO a guaranteed future.

I would have given this book 5 stars if it weren't for the author's pushing either trump or Bernie as the only reasonable choices. People who thought that gave us trump, whom everyone has to agree was no good for education. His solution to the problem of people being priced out of a college education are all good - gap years, a year of service to the nation, free college, less restrictive enrolling, less spending on perks to lure the 1% and more spending on actual education, and ultimately less spending on war and more spending on the lives of citizens. All these are good solutions, but if you don't elect people who know how politics work, then you don't get any of them.… (more)
