If You Only Knew is the epitome of the title, contemporary romance. The situation was true to life, and the characters were people we’ve all known at one time or another. Ms. Bergman does a stellar job of placing you in a world and not letting you surface until you’ve read the last sentence. My main issue with this story was it seemed to lack romance. So much of the story was spent with the heroine Marley I felt like I never got to know Richard, or see the “spark” between them. I think a little bit of length added to this one would’ve gone a long way.

Marley is a romance novelist who’s been in love with her best friend Richard, since they met in college. Through the years she’s kept her feeling to herself, because she’s terrified of ruining their close relationship, and the time never seems to be right. She’s suffered through romance after romance, as Richard continues to choose woman who don’t do him justice. But it’s this last woman, Laura who becomes the straw that broke the camel’s back. Snippy and spiteful when their alone, Laura uses Marley’s plus size against her as she exploits her insecurities.

When Laura’s behavior is exposed, and Marley lays her heart on the line to Richard, will she find her happily ever after or be heart broken?
