Mormons and the Bible: The Place of the Latter-Day… by Philip L. Barlow

Barlow writes here a history of the use of the Bible in the LDS (Mormon) Church, starting with how Joseph Smith Jr. read and studied the work and how the use of the Bible changed as different men became prophet-president.

Of particular interest was the chapter discussing why the LDS Church use the King James (Authorised) version when other churches transition to more accessible translations. Barlow proposes that since the language of the KJV, its Jacobean heritage, was that which Joseph Smith read and understood, and that it is similar in style to the language of the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants.

Altogether this is an interesting, readable, and even-handed book that contributes useful points to the study of the LDS church.… (more)

Mormons and the Bible : the place of the Latter-Day… by Philip L. Barlow

Barlow's work is a great introduction to the position of the Bible in the Mormon Church. He makes some very interesting observations.
