The Bees

A lowly sanitation worker bee flies to new heights as we follow a year in the life of a beehive. Everything for the hive, the bees are attuned to each other, chanting, humming and thrumming. Living by the rigid hive rules of Accept, Obey, Serve, even when it hurts. The Hive Mind. The Myriad, consisting of all those who would hurt bees - spiders, wasps, crows. The horror of too much rain, or smoke accompanied by thievery. Very different, I found it to be exceptional.

I can't see bees or wasps without thinking of this book. Very memorable!

Pretty sure it is going to be the same for me, Laura. A one-of-a-kind story.

It sure was, Carol. It is staying with me, too. I'm rather sorry it is over. It never occurred to me that a story told from the viewpoint of bees would be so compelling.

We have been living at our country property, here in Utah, for almost 20 years, and all this time, I have seen only 2 or 3 bees in our garden. Scary, isn't it?
We don't use any pesticides, and we border hundreds of acres federal lands (where not pesticides are used either). Alfalfa fields which may or may not use pesticides, are quite a few miles away.

Yes, it's scary. When I was a kid, the yard would be abuzz with honey bees gathering nectar from the clover and its white flowers. I'm in Missouri, and we see a few bees now, but not many.
